After the previous ranging post I figure now's the time to do some real journal writing. This week has been tiring and the following ones do not seem to look better. At least until my finals.
Wednesday & Thursday
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I had tests. Polish, Geography and Knowledge of Society respectively. So, after skipping evening classes to study for Polish because I learned about it a day earlier what did I do on Wednesday evening? I certainly didn't study. I checked my mail and saw
metisket updated her Fullmetal Alchemist fic. I haven't read FMA in ages but her's are always the top quality works so I bit into it right away. Then I realized that instead of reading next chapter I in fact missed two and she just posted three more at the same time. Long chapters.
...
Obviously my will is of rubber and not of steel because I spent from 9pm to 1am catching up on all she wrote and ditching studying. Thankfully, someone out there must love me because I started at 11am next day and our teacher gave us questions for my group so I had time to go over them and wrote almost everything on that Geography test.
Here's the fic that broke my resolve:
In Defiance of a Reason - crazy!Ed verse It's not only a stunningly exciting adventure but also, more importantly, a hilarious story that made me lose my breath at times from all laughing.
Friday
On Friday I went to the gym again with PG. Again in borrowed trousers.Thank the powers so far every time we went to gym it was after PE so I had people to borrow workout trousers from. However, my mum is starting to get irritated at all the washing of stranger's pants she has to do. ... Me and washing machine hate each other. I do not understand it and it likes to stand there and scare the fuck out of me.
At the gym there was this super fit woman who made me nervous and determinate at the same time. And i walked 20 floors on one machine! Apparently after 20 floors you only lose 50kcal so maybe it's not so exciting. But I did it in five minutes!
I admit to having added more than a couple of FMA and HarryxDraco communities back to my friends page (I fear checking it ever since). And to getting immersed in another FMA fic, again a whole alternative universe:
Bitter Universe Saturday
I took me hours but I read Camus'
'The Plague'. It's one of the books that are compulsory to read in our school system but I really enjoyed it, which is a first. It was surprisingly interesting and, even though it had it's slower moments, it was the best lecture of the ones I had to read for school in all those years. It had fun character that I couldn't help but slash at times, the fact that some were married notwithstanding. ;D
The book talks about the breakout of bubonic plague - the black death. The theme is not light, the author describes the gradual spread of the epidemic, the deaths, city being sealed, citizens virtually becoming prisoners in their own town and gradual effects that it has on all people. Through it all we get lead by an unnamed narrator who just reveals that he was there when the thing happened. [However, do not get mislead, the city is real, and it was attacked by bubonic plague many times but never on the scale described or at such time.] There are many characters that take up a lot of pages but I think those are four most important:
Dr. Bernard Rieux - he's the one we mainly follow. The one who first notices copious rat deaths in the city and presses into taking measures with it. All through the story we learn little of Rieux besides the fact that the plague broke out just after he sent his wife for a treatment in a clinic and that he's a true doctor. He helps his patients as much as he can, working far more than should be possible, all the while thinking of it only as doing his job.
Jean Tarrou - a mysterious man who came to the city before the break out and then turns to Rieux offering help with organizing volunteers to help doctors. He's the main reason for my slashy reasons he's first, he's very caring about Rieux and after some months moves in with him and second, he obsesses over Cottard.
Cottard - another mystery man only this time he starts off much more spectacular than Tarrou. We first meet Cottard when Rieux is called to him after he attempts suicide. However, afterward Cottard makes miraculous recovery and seems to be the only one who enjoys the plague.
Joseph Grand - he's just a humble administration worker and the one who finds Cottard after his unsuccessful attempt. Apparently, he's writing a book.
I'm really too tired to write smoothly but know this: The Plague is a good book. My week was fun. :)
