On investments

I was digging around online last night trying to find the specs on my electric guitar when I stumbled across this link. It's some sort of used Gibson guitar dealer based in the UK. As it turns out, that's precisely the model of guitar I own, right down to the year, the colour and the finish.

I paid $1000 for my guitar, including the custom hardshell case that came with it, back in 1992. It was used, but very gently so; any of the blemishes that guitar currently has are completely my fault. Even used, that price was an absolute steal for a Gibson Les Paul Standard, and anyone who knows anything about guitars will back that up.

That site is currently retailing that guitar - MY guitar - for what amounts to about $2770 Canadian.

I'd always decided that, if I'm lucky enough to have children who become musicians, I'd like to hand that guitar down as a family heirloom. Nice to know it'll have some value if I do so.

Going to see They Might Be Giants tomorrow. I'm very excited. :) Dan and I are heading into Toronto in the afternoon to hit some guitar shops and do a little browsing, then heading to the show in the evening.

Speaking of browsing, I've discovered that Musician's Friend is a very dangerous place to spend my time. It's an online music gear retailer, and it's ridiculous how much stuff they carry.

Most dangerously, they offer a wishlist you can post online. Mine might look a little bit like this...
