Written for a request made by akinarei here. It's probably not quite what you were hoping for, Aki, but I hope you like it anyway. ^^;

Title: Found
Fandom: Ghost Hunt
Rating: PG
Pairing: It was supposed to be LinxMai. It's a little more Lin->Mai. -_-;
Disclaimer: Ono Fuyumi and Inada Shiho own the novels/manga.
Warning: Set during the ending of the Silent Christmas arc so it contains some vague spoilers for that case.

Found

I have a severe dislike of people clinging to me. The sentiment also holds true for children's dramatics, disrespect shown to elders, and looking like a fool. Yet, somehow, the case we have just wrapped up managed to include all of these while adding a few more irritations to my ever-expanding list. In fact, since meeting Taniyama-san I would have to say that said list has grown exponentially.

My breath fogs the window a little as I look outside. The darkness of the clouds indicates rain, but with how fast the day cooled it just may change to sleet or snow. Getting back to the office could become a bit of a mess if the precipitation falls heavily. We should be leaving, or at very least I should be helping the others pack up the equipment to speed the process along, but Naru instructed me to watch over Taniyama-san until she wakes. Surely someone else could have done this instead. It is a waste of my time.

A prolonged gust rattles the window as if in response to my flash of anger. The trees still visible in the dimming light shake, and the sound of rustling leaves is drowned out by the howling of the wind.

"It's a good thing Taniyama-san was found quickly."

I start at my own quiet murmur. A glance to the side reveals no change in Taniyama-san's condition. I wish I could say the same for myself. What in the world brought that on? I could brush the unconsciously spoken words off by saying they were merely a polite concern for the well-being of another person, but I despise it when others fool themselves with lies and would feel every bit the hypocrite if I allowed myself to do the same. Something else brought forth that statement of relief, and if I am to stay in this room for an undetermined amount of time then the least I can do is attempt to figure out that cause.

The first conclusion I reach is the most illogical as far as I am concerned. As one who does not allow emotions to overtake reason, there is little chance this train of thought is correct. I am not growing fond of Taniyama Mai. I can say the words to myself as many times as necessary until I accept it as truth. Except...

Except, and the thought treads tentatively through my mind, that I have the sinking feeling that I would be lying to myself with every repetition.

Oh bloody hell. This is quite the last thing I needed.

I curse silently just as the rustle of blankets nearby indicates Taniyama-san will soon wake. Her uncanny ability to inconvenience others without the conscious intention to do so continues.

Surprisingly, though, the thought carries much less criticism than I would have expected. I do not actually smile at the realization but my mood raises slightly all the same. It seems now that I have actually admitted the idea of this.. attachment, for lack of a better word, to myself that some part of my mind is clinging to it as strongly as Taniyama-san held on to me just a few hours ago. Logic be damned, it seems.

I wonder if Naru realizes just what he's done by telling me to stay here. After a moment's pondering I decide that no, he wouldn't because his mind doesn't work that way. Judging from his snide remarks about my maturity level he most likely meant this arrangement as a punishment for losing my temper. While I readily concede that there is a strong element of discomfort to my self-discovery I cannot say in all honesty that it is entirely unwelcome. I will profess no more than that for the time being.

The soft sound of cloth sliding against itself reaches me again and I turn back to the window. My breath crystallizes on the glass once more as I wait for the coming storm.

ACK. Why did this fic start writing itself in first person?! Of all the damn awkward points of view to write from... >_<
I went with manga cannon for the scenes around this one, and it doesn't indicate exactly why Lin is in Mai's room. If the novels happen to give more information, well, I'm not privy to it at this point.
Lin seems very cold in this story, at least to begin with. It doesn't seem to me that he really starts to treat Mai with anything warmer than a standoffish attitude until the Blood-Soaked Labyrith arc (the only notable exception that comes to mind is when he rescues her from the well in the Doll House arc). Though if he seems really OOC in this story then I accept the fault for that. -_-;
