It's raining! Post-summer-inspiration weather, but not very good news, because school starts on Wednesday. I weep tears of deepest sorrow - I think I've never felt quite so unwilling to go back to school, mostly because I'm afraid of the workload (also because I've been sleeping about nine hours every day the past three months, and I'm still tired all the time).
No stormy weather when we went out of town. Bohol was nice; the tarsiers were so cute and so soft, and I really liked the Loboc river cruise. It was like some panoramic movie view, with rows of trees on either side of you and the river straight ahead, complete with standards background music. Like a Disney ride; I kept expecting a wax figure to appear in the bend, the way they do in Pirates of the Caribbean. We even saw a kid swinging over the river on a rope tied to a tree. We went dolphin watching that day too, although the sun was in my eyes since I forgot to bring my hat. The dolphins were so small, but it was still nice to see packs of them swimming, although very few of them did those picturesque dolphin jumps. I finally got to see a jellyfish, too - it was brown and furry and its tentacles were shorter than I expected.
I found this old Fushigi Yuugi fic that I really liked:
Honeyrider by Gerald Tarrant. It's still good. I used to have one huge, unedited wordpad file of good FY fics way back in 2000 - there were some really priceless stories in there, but I've lost all the titles. Doesn't help that I lost interest, too. Another FY classic is Sleeping Bishounen by Aeanagwen and Celleri, which is hilarious; and Houki's Murder Mystery by omni82 on ff.net, which is really well-planned. I've been rereading my FY stuff lately - my punctuation was so bad, I did the Japanese-dialogue thing, and I never had any idea where the story was going, although I pretty much did what I wanted to. I guess it's a lot more free than the stuff I do now, a lot easier on the brain and editing, but not as polished or pretty. I found this really interesting paragraph, though, from a Miaka-perspective chapter: What could I say? I loved Tamahome more than Hotohori, and right then I loved him so much I thought my heart would explode. He looked so sad and lost, so much like a little boy that I just wanted to grab him and kiss him until he shouted out in disgust. "Iie, Tamahome, there's nothing going on between Hoto and I. We're just good friends, that's all...besides..." Here I took a deep breath..."I like someone else..."
I dunno. It rings of an honesty that I find hard to come by now, when characterizing. ^^x Also, more surprising, that I wrote that through Miaka, who was never my favorite character to write through. I always portrayed her as shamelessly gluttonous and stupid. x_x

Jerry the Frog Productions. His parodies rock. I am a sucker for such parodies. I suggest the Yami no Matsuei (love that thing), Star Wars Episode 2 and 3 and Narnia parodies. Then again, I haven't read everything yet, and it's probably all good. I don't laugh out loud much, but this stuff actually induced me to.
Over the trip I finished The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. It took a while for me to get into it, and to identify with the protagonist, but it was a good read. Fulfilling. There are too many similes for my taste, although I know that's her writing style, but some of her scenes are really magical.
"...and I'm trying to say that you've been...no, you're so, you're ---"
He stopped. Looking into his dark eyes was like gazing at a calm river, and in them she saw the reflection of the leaning trees behind her, of golden leaves, of herself crowned by autumn. She lifted her face to him and was aware of the fullness of the sun on her skin, breaking through the cold air. Geric touched her cheek, smooth as a teardrop, thrilling as a lightning storm. She felt real.
"You are," he said.
That dangling dialogue was really well employed. Also, she's a very real author; she keeps a blog and talks about upcoming stories and publishing and ideas, which is all good. ^^
Reading Dark Lord of Derkholm by DWJ now, and it's great, etc, as usual. <3 to all her books.
