essay reccs?

I don't really know what makes a good essay. I can do clarity and organization. I can polish the grammar. But I can't seem to write an essay without doing that preachy, this-must-have-a-moral thing at the end; and I don't know how to be witty, or how to make it pretty without sounding too fiction-y. I don't want to seem like I'm showing off, but I don't want it to sound flat and boring, either. Most of the time, because I'm so focused on clarity, I just end up sounding...childish.

...I feel really bad when I get less-than-satisfactory scores on essays and I don't know why. But I don't feel like I can ask my teacher.

Dear flist, it would help me a lot if you answered me these two questions:
1. What makes a good essay?
2. Is there any essay that you've really liked and enjoyed?

Reccs would be a big help.
