I've been doing tech support for 6.5 months now (and thank christ the end is in sight, but that's a whole 'nother post). People yell at us all the time, because they need to vent, or because they receive crappy service, or because we sabotage their computers to enliven our otherwise dull days. Most of the time it doesn't bother me, and normally I am able to coax them into being nice again.
I've only gotten upset twice. Today I cried because a nasty lawyer called Tom yelled at me. Told me I was useless just because I couldn't fix his computer instantly with the power of my mind.
tom_marzipan and
jameswebbe, don't grow up to be like this man. He was horrid. All "I am far too busy for this!" and "We pay you to make our computers work, why has it gone wrong?" and then as I explained why it had gone wrong "I don't need to hear why it went wrong, just make it so it isn't broken any more"
We have one of those automated "press one if you want to reset your password" systems on our main phone number. I'm going to put in a request that we add an Option 9 - press nine if you want to rant loudly and at length to someone paid not to shout back at you. This line would be staffed by people on large doses of tranquilisers and they would agree with every word that the idiot customers say, and would keep them on the line until the men with cattleprods arrived.
I want a sticker that says "Be nice to your tech support people. Or we will mess up your computer so bad you won't dare call us again"
