The Ontario Government is set to give the province's lowest paid workers a $2 raise over the next three years.
The Toronto Star reports Thursday's Ontario budget will include a bump in the minimum wage to $10.25 an hour by 2010.
Sources say the increase will be phased in over three years.
Ontario's minimum wage will jump to $8.75 next year, $9.25 an hour in 2009 and to $10.25 in 2010.
Finance Minister Greg Sorbara is expected to release a study on Thursday that warns of heavy job losses if the government were to immediately increase the minimum wage to $10.
The minimum wage was $6.85 an hour in 2003 when the Liberals came to power. The Ontario Government has gradually increased it to $8.
I'm not sure I agree with this. Many people working minimum wage jobs are teens who live with mommy and daddy and work to buy stupid crap... they definitely don't need more money. A high minimum wage encourages big corporations and discourages the little guys who may not be able to pay staff more.
Some people are trying to support a family on minimum wage, and yes, more would help them.. in many of these cases my reaction is 'tough, you should have thought about that before popping out the sprogs', but I do realize that shit happens and some people find themselves, say, a suddenly single mom who lost her job and can only find a shitty one..
There should be more taken into consideration - maybe a higher minimum wage for those who need it, or more support for small businesses to make up for this change.. what do you think?
