My new job has me searching for the nearest soap box. My experiences of mental health have been listening to the observations of academics, discussing with friends who have various types of depression and reading a rather good manic depression blog (written and experienced by an internet type acquintance of all things!).
But I didnt realise all the gaps in the system, the ways young people fall through. Incorrect housing, not having their treatment discussed with them because the professionals know best (so take the pills and shut up), having to move across the country because Scotland doesn't have enough mentals to need any sort of adequate ward space for them all (but look at the waiting list).
The past week I have heard from workers from different fields as I attempt to do my new job, an advocacy worker and researcher (working title of paper: The need for children and young people's rights to be heard in the Health Service).
The Mental Health Act, in Scotland anyway, has been active in the minds of these professionals for 3 years now (published 5 years ago) and yet things are still going wrong.
I know I will use the sentence "a more integrated multi-disciplinary support for young people is needed", and to talk to one individual at a time, they would agree with me.
So why isn't more being done.
frustration,
mental health,
research
