It was nice to get away from the city lights for a while. Instead of concrete under foot their feet were cushioned by the grass they were marching through. They didnt know why they were in such a rush, looking for nature's equivalent of the skyscraper. Trees are okay, but the sky is untainted, not left with the same cat claw marks as in the big towns. Not the same scars they usually see, where the tower blocks are aiming higher and higher, craning their metal frames to the sun, the windows glimmering with the heat. Here it is quieter, instead of the roar of the traffic, its the gentle hush of the leaves. Instead of people pushing past you on the all too crowded pavements, its a breeze ruffling the back of their hair, pushing it into their eyes. The other stops to brush it out, causing a smile to break.
"You don't have to be so sullen here, you don't have to run from happiness"
She's made up like a doll, eyes wide with fear and painted on smile. It's a constant feature, a positive image goes far in a big city. When she talks it is with hushed tones, usually drowned out by the big city motions behind her. They stop at a small stream and he cups his hands, the water he gathers falls through the gaps in his fingers with bitten finger nails. He wipes the paint away. Under the paint she looks worried.
"We don't have to run here, how can we escape more than we already have"
Without the paint, her expression changes. Its no longer one face, its different faces. Different moods. He sees her change. Her voice gains volume and the uncertainty leaves. They sit under a tree and count the leaves, not caring when one falls off as it will only land near them and such small change surely wont matter. Who cares if you count 100 leaves or 101?
"The big city is good for hiding in, you lose yourself so easily"
Here you can't hide, you wouldn't want to. If you hid you would miss the warmth of the sun on your face and the calm inside. In the city they tried to cover their trail so no one would be able to follow them completely. The others knew what they had to and no more. Looking back at their path its obvious where they've been, they dont think to cover their tracks any more.
"We have to go back now"
