"In later years, he would say it was a little like freezing to death: mental clouding and confusion, then amnesia, forgetting what he'd known and been before; a creeping numbness and loss of control, of sense, of direction; then utter, absolute coldness, the death of all warmth, all sensation, in him; and, finally, brain and body dying, mistaking deadly cold for warmth, simply lying down and going to sleep, slipping into the nothing.

"Yeah. Being with Damien had been exactly like freezing to death."

So incredibly vivid. A truly awesome opening.

"And something deep in the earth shuddered."

No kidding.

It's great how the other characters' reactions do all the work toward showing how deadly and ruthless Eliot is. No need to lay down heavy threats; just show the guards holstering their guns when they recognize him.

"number of times - people - he'd killed"

The mental correction here is priceless.

I love how you pull all the threads together and explain the little pieces... like how how it could be that Eliot can play chess well but it never comes up between him and Nate 'til season 4... and how Eliot's hand came to shake when he holds a gun... and how Moreau and Eliot parted amicably (and even fondly, on Moreau's part). Eliot's loyalty never falters, even as he feels his soul dying under the weight of it all.

And...

"Then he could find somewhere away from everyone and break into pieces in private."

Absolutely.

Ah, the things you've done with a few little scenes that Kane and Visnjic played the hell out of. Excellent, truly.
