He's had the feeling that he's being watched for two days, now. He's putting it down to fatigue, because every time he looks around, there's no one there.
There's been other small oddities, though, even if he hasn't noticed them all. The teapot that mysteriously appeared in the housekeeper's cupboard. The stray cat that followed him into the fort in the morning. The seagull that watched him from a post during his daily inspection of the ships.
He did notice the odd amber-coloured eyes on the boy who brought the dispatches, but he was preoccupied, and didn't take much notice.
