Detroit. We are heading into my second winter in my adopted city and I am relishing the feeling of cold and steel. Detroit is coming back. I am new to it and I come from The City which will never know the kind of struggle that Detroit has faced for most of recent memory. It is coming back. I work as a cog in a wheel right now rather than in my old spot in front of a class, but this wheel is turning the machine of recovery in Detroit. This wheel believes, as I believe, that businesses need to come back downtown and so too do people. We need to live in this city again. We need to eat and drink here. We need to shop in local shops and go to local groceries. We need to drink the local beer. (I’ll fall on that particular grenade with great gusto. Detroit boasts several amazing breweries that compete for favor in my eyes because they are all so damned good. ) I may not be working at my dream job right now, but I have love, friends, family, health and a city that is becoming my true home. I have so much. As this job progresses, I will want more. I will want more right here, in Detroit.
