For Jack

Continued from here"I'm trying," he says honestly, the frustration plain in his voice. "I'm trying really hard." And maybe he's thought about ending things with Alcuin. Maybe it's come into his head when he's lying in bed alone at night and he can't help but think about Alcuin and Rupert off somewhere doing... whatever. But he can't imagine leaving ( Read more... )

"No, that was all you two," Jack replied, though his grin gave away just what he thought of that. "Prior is...fabulous. He's got his own issues, though. Honestly, everyone here has issues. I think that falling in love here is actually harder than people think."

"Falling in love everywhere is hard," he returns, "but the island makes it worse." His blush deepens as Jack apparently further approves of this Scotty-and-Prior combination that he's still trying to understand.

"Is it really that hard?" Jack asked without any guile or smartass tone. It seemed, to him, like people had a pretty damned easy time falling in love. Of course, he was never anywhere for very long, so he never saw how things turned out for what appeared to be happy couples.

"It is. If you even make it to marriage, there were so many people back home getting divorced and remarried and divorced again. People grow and change constantly, and love doesn't always grow with that. That's if you can even make it work before it gets far off the ground." He shrugs, his expression saddening.

That is the most disconcerting thing he's heard. Even though he knew Logan and Neil had gotten divorced, they were the exception to the rule. Disappearance was far more likely to happen here.

Jack didn't even try to hide the fact that the very thought of things being that hard disturbed him. He scowled and looked over at Logan briefly, then back at Scotty.

"So..." he said finally, the word halting and hesitant. "It can work out for the best, too. It took a long time for me and Logan to figure shit out. Maybe you and Alcuin just need time." The teasing about Prior was abruptly abandoned.

Honestly, increasingly, Scotty isn't so sure, but he's trying so hard. Alcuin doesn't deserve to be hurt. He smiles at Jack's change of tune, and he settles a hand on his arm lightly. He appreciates the reassurance -- it seems sincere, and Scotty tries to take it to heart.

"I hope you're right."

"I'm always right. People should listen to me more often." Of course, it would help if he'd actually give up what he knew- or thought he knew. When people did ask and when Jack laid things out, though...he had a tendency to be spot on in his assessment and advice.

Daniel had learned that the hard way.

He smiles more sincerely at that and laughs, nodding. "I'll make it a point to always listen to your advice, Jack."

"Maybe not every time," he chuckled. "Fashion advice...skip it."

He laughs, squeezing Jack's arm. "Aw, I think you're a fantastic dresser."

"I have my moments. And sometimes I do okay. I dressed Logan tonight," he replied. "Well, I didn't dress him. I just picked out that suit."

"And he looks very handsome. It's cute that you picked out his clothes," he grins.

"He told me to pick something," Jack shrugged. "He does it for me, too. Sometimes. I like when he dresses up, but sometimes I have to almost make him. Today he really didn't care. I could have given him jeans and a t-shirt and he'd have worn it."

He rolls his eyes slightly. "Oh, yes. That unfortunate trait. I confess that I've never been quite like that."

"To be honest, I don't care what he wears. I just like taking it off, anyway," he grinned, then took a small sip of his drink.

He laughs first, then adds, "In the snow." Just to tease him.
