Life on the Enterprise settled back into its usual routine after the breakup of Spock and Uhura. Many people kept a close eye on the pair, waiting for any signs of distress but they were to be disappointed. Spock merely continued things as usual and Uhura seemed to be carrying on quite well. The reason for this was not known to many, but Christine Chapel, Nyota's best friend, had her suspicions. The communications officer seemed to be spending a great deal of time with a certain Scottish engineer. When questioned about him, Nyota was unusually reticent which made Christine wonder.
Walking into the Mess Hall for lunch, she found the two of them sitting together, laughing about something. Uhura motioned her over and Scotty gave her one of his beaming grins. "Hullo Christine." he said cheerfully.
"Hi Scotty. Hi Nyota." she replied, setting her tray down.
"Hi Christine. Things going okay in Sickbay?" Nyota asked sympatheticlly. One of the higher-up nurses had been giving the junior crew a hard time and had been nicknamed "The Dragon Lady".
"They are now. Dr. McCoy chewed her out a good one." she chuckled.
"Aye, I can see him enjoyin' that." Scotty shrugged.
"How about you?" Christine asked, arching an eyebrow.
Nyota suddenly found her lunch extremely engrossing and Scotty was whistling to himself as he ate his sandwich quickly. "Got to get going." he sighed. "Tha bairns don't know the engines from their own arses so I have to go sort them out."
Uhura laughed and swatted him on the arm. "They know more than that and you know it, Scotty."
He grinned. "Got ye ta laugh, didn't I?" he asked as he left the Mess Hall.
"Nyota, seriously...what is going on with him?" Christine hissed.
Looking around, Uhura leaned in. "Look, this is what happened..."
She related the story of the turbolift and Christine's eyes widened. "He likes you!"
"I thought so..." Nyota sighed. "But he's not really responding when I try to flirt with him. He acts like everything is a joke."
"Sometimes men don't know when they're being flirted with." she replied matter of factly. "You have to be direct. I grew up with four brothers."
Nyota considered this. "Do you think I should?" she asked. Christined was slightly surprised; Uhura was usually so confident when it came to things.
"Definitely. I haven't seen you smile this much in a long time. Go for it! He's adorable."
"Okay." she nodded, her mind made up. "See you later."
Christine watched her go, hoping that Scotty would wake up and see the dilithium crystals for what they were.

Uhura caught up to Scotty after dinner at the observation deck. It had been their official meeting place for the past few weeks and they would talk while looking at the stars. She'd learned a lot about him and liked what she saw in him.
"Och, hullo lass." he chuckled after she'd said hello. "I was lookin' at that nebula over there and ye startled me!"
"Oh no!" Uhura said, an expression of mock distress on her face. He growled playfully, but couldn't help laughing. His merriment was infectious and she soon had a smile on her own face.
"You're a nut, Scotty." she sighed.
"Aye, but ye like it." he winked.
"Yeah...I do." she said softly.
Scotty paused in surprise. Was he reading her right? He had a knack for thinking there was more to things than was acutally there. "I'm glad." he said lightly. "If ye didna like me, we couldn't very well be friends, could we?" He was painfully aware that he was babbling, but he couldn't seem to get his mouth to stop moving.
She moved closer to him and put a finger over his lips, effectively silencing him. "Scotty, just shut up and kiss me, all right?"
His mother had raised him to be a gentleman...so he fullfilled her request.
Pulling back from him, Uhura looked at him for a moment. "Somethin' on yer mind?" he asked nervously.
"Just wondering why I didn't do this sooner." she said before bringing her head back to his.
Christine Chapel was walking to her quarters when she saw them and allowed a small smile to creep onto her face. It felt very nice to be right.
