(From a writing challenge on Oct. 29, 2012 to myself: Post a series of poems of no more than 4 lines in length whose theme is the sound in old video games (the music, the noises, the bleeps). Originally posted on Facebook.)
#1
Robotron 2084
Glitch pop before I knew the song
I've never heard a robot scream
A game as hyper as I was
Electric death, electric life
#2
Tron
The man who composed you is a woman now,
found her true self in your plugs and sockets.
Regeneration into a new realm
lit red like the old, lit blue like the new
#3
Q*bert
Somewhere between the winning splat
and the cursing bloom of defeat,
that is exactly what rainbows
sound like when monsters jump on them.
#4
Space Invaders
A skeet of ammunition under the
march of invasion. Even now, I hear
the explosions muted by the vacuum
where the cosmos meets the sky meets my gun.
#5
Pac-Man
You are under arrest.
You can run but never hide.
There is no hiding here.
The sirens are for you.
#6
Gauntlet
Wizard needs food badly
Remember: don’t shoot food
oh oh oh oh oh oh
Use magic to kill Death
