I won (tied) the slam last night!
I had a real itch during NPS that didn't get scratched and I haven't won a WB slam for a long time (mostly because I haven't been in them, but when I was, I wasn't doing the do). Yesterday I said to hell with that, buckled down, wrote new work, edited old work, timed it, got it in my mouth before I actually got on stage and came back from a 5th or 6th place rank in the first round to 1st in the second. I needed a 29.9 to win it. I got a 29.8 to tie with Louise Robertson. I'll take that.
The poets are really bringing their A game this season. If cats were slamming like this for the team, who KNOWS what would have happened?!
Rachel Reid was an awesome MC, but she always is. I miss her up there! She'll be doing it again next week. When she said the poetry at Nats blew her hair off I lost it, and I had been keeping it in pretty good. Hey guys: when faced with half a room who haven't seen a slam before, it's your job to show them how to amp it up. Audiences don't always come in knowing how they should behave. We're a wacky night. Let 'em know (without fucking up the MC).
I'm surprised no one asked for a tie-breaker. It's not a rule we've come up with because it never happened before for first place (I don't think), but maybe we'll rap about it for future seasons if anyone cares. I could go either way.
My first poem, "Molasses Swamp", was completely stolen from the life of
tahmthelame and
amberdulen . I've been begging Megan to write a poem about her brother, who has Downs Syndrome, for a long time and she refuses. So I talked with her, got the many threads of their story, and wrote it myself. Thank you Megan for your patience and bravery. Amanda, I hope you approve as well.
