NPS: The Repealed No-Repeat Rule

Aug 12, 2009 10:46

I don't have much to offer here.  The rule was rescinded, so repeat poems will be allowed on NPS finals stages again.

I voted for the no-repeat rule every time it came up for a vote, and voted against changing it now (once it was amended).  Like every other rule in Slam, it rotates out of favor with the flavors and seasons.  Don't worry: it'll change again depending on who's at a future SM meeting.

I will say this: I thought that the original motion - which wasn't a full repeal, but the allowance of no more than 2 repeats per team in finals - was an excellent compromise.  It fell dead-center on the whole argument and it was a nice balance on all sides.  Of course, this meant that it was destined to fail in its exact form.  People who got a voice in the argument (my hand went up way too late on this one, but I'm not used to being allowed to speak my mind in SM meetings, so I'm rusty) didn't see the compromise for what it was and swung for the bleachers instead.  Slammers...we like our extremes.

So to be clear - because I have no interest in discussing this in further meetings and every time it shows up on agendas it makes me sleepy - I like the no-repeat rule (it hasn't hurt WOWps or iWPS finals), and I like a rule that allows for some repeat and some as-yet unperformed work as a second.  I don't like an all-repeatable finals, but I no longer have the strength to care.  Bigger dragons than this.
