Scott's World

I've been uncovered!

Someone stopped me busted me out the other day. They'd come across some old stuff I'd written (short story) and contrasted a statement in one tale to some things in another story and asked me, "Are these connected?"

I've been waiting years for someone to find me out! Now that I've been discovered, I can tell the world:

All of my work takes place in the same world.
The stories, the poems, the screenplays...all of it. Same places (when they are the same), same time (when the times are current)...all things happening in the same continuity of existence. Most of the stuff I write takes place in Columbus, so some of the characters have referenced other characters in other stories or poems, and some of them are even related (though they may or may not know it). Because I've been real bad about releasing the fiction and what-not with any regularity this may not be as apparent to most people who follow my work, but I've resolved to fix that this year. You'll start to see some of the clicking of the big wheel unfold.

I ascribe two things in my childhood to the development of what I can only reasonably refer to as "Scott's Universe": comic books and Frank Zappa.

Comic books operate under the premise of universes very blatantly. Heroes from one book often come into contact and affect the outcomes of characters and situations in other titles. There's something very powerful about creating your very own playpen and all of the toys in it.

Frank Zappa used to come pounding out of one of my older brother's bedroom all the time, especially the electric stuff ("Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention" most notably) and trying to emulate his coolness sent me on a search for the prolific man who could craft such nutty music. As I grew older, I came into a more mature, fully-realized appreciation for all things Zappa and the long-standing rumor that he had viewed his ouevre as one big operatic-like tale appealed to me on different levels.

So now you know...the REST of the story. I'm so relieved that it clicked with someone that I'm even going to dedicate a site to it eventually for fun.
