Some favorite stage moments...

(...from Rust Belt, obviously.)

- Getting a 5.5 for "Flavor of Love".  You wonder what goes on in a judge's mind when they give a score like that for a poem like that.  Not that it's the greatest poem in the world, but goodness: it was the lowest single score of the night.  I thought it was hilarious.

First of all, yeah, that is funny. But this interests me because every so often a judge makes the decision to disagree. When we (as poets) take a stance against something popular, more times than not it is received fairly well and even welcomed because of liberal nature of the poetry slam community. But it becomes interesting when a judge listens to a poem and says, "you know what, I disagree with that." Alvin and I have talked a couple times about his "What Tiger Said" piece. I think its incredibly well crafted and versed with beautiful language and revelations. I just don't agree with Tiger Woods in the context he uses him. So I don't really know how I personally would ever score that piece. When I do the "Why Tyra is Fat" piece I know I have two potential pitfalls in the poem before I start: 1) that people will never recover from the beginning when I call Tyra fat & 2) That there are fans of Tyra that don't agree with my criticism of her. In our Duet, Dave and I put that "quills dripping politics no one would disagree ( ... )

Will, I couldn't agree more.

I think you probably nailed that judge on the head. I wanted to find that judge and ask out of sheer curiosity, but I think it's poor form to confront judges in ANY way after a slam unless they approach you first. I believe very firmly in the democracy of art that Slam provides, and sometimes that means letting the vote be a vote.

Ah, Eye Witness. The only reason Team Dayton didn't tie Team Atlata for last place that round. Yeah, he dropped us 5 points down from ATL, and it was hilarious to watch. I had actually tuned him out because he just kept talking, then I realized that Linc was talking about tranquilizer darts...
