Last night's MPSL finals was a really fun, really great show, filled with the kind of comraderie and midwest love that the league is known for.
Marc Smith and the Green Mill were PERFECT foils for the league's show, being typically engaging and fun for everyone. MPSL poets dominated the open mic - many of whom hadn't ever been to the historic Mill - and the legacy of Slam moved forward in very clear, noble ways last night. On top of that, Marc doubled the traditional prize money, practically energizing the poets into gas money frenzy!
I took a crew of Columbus poets just to watch, and that's a six-hour drive...but it was worth every bit of $4-a-gallon gas we bought.
The winners of the slam were:
1st - Milwaukee Noun Hounds - $200
2nd - Detroit - $100
3rd - Dayton Dunbarhoppers - $50
Congratulations to everyone!
Next year we'll make it even better.
See you guys in October, when we ACTUALLY start putting this thing together.
Thanks Marc, the Mill and all of the poets who read.
ADDs:
- Marc asked me to co-MC it with him during the break after the open mic. I, of course, leapt at the opportunity. I've never hosted at the Mill, and while this was sort of Hosting Lite, how many people can say they hosted the Mill in any capacity? We heckle good together, by the way.
- Rachel is a driving machine.
- Kim snores like two dudes.
- Having a PSP for a road trip like that is utterly awesome.
- Gym Scoks and Slow Jams.
- I have committed to making a new album entitled "The History of Black Music". It'll be mostly parody, so you'll get to hear a lot of genres done very badly, which should be very funny.
