Random thoughts on music are pretty few and far between for me. The only LJ post I've had about music-like things was a short bit about not being able to write songfics. But I do like music in general. Typically when the radio is on in my car, it's on the pop station though I do stray to another station that plays more of the, for want of a better term, 90s kind of music. A friend pointed me towards a newish public radio station that plays a lot of rock songs with the added bonus of not having commercials.
One of my guilty pleasures is watching American Idol. It's not compelling, not really, but I still watch it. This year is a little different. This year it's the *guys* that are good. While the new format of airing the show three nights and splitting up the guys and girls is nothing more than a ratings stunt to bring in more many for Fox's biggest show for the last three years, I think the show's producers are happy they did it. If it wasn't for that, the top twelve would have ten guys. Some of the girls that song last night were very good, most of them seemed to be playing it safe, a couple sucked ass. The guys have blown them away so far. One thing that irritated my today was after Carrie Underwood's performance. She's a pretty good singer, a little more country that I usually like, but she should be able to continue with her cuteness factor. She sang a countrified version of Janis Joplin's "Piece of my Heart," which some country singer or another released a while back. But judges took her to task for the choice, saying that it was a bad attempt at showing diversity instead of playing to her strengths (which is somewhat inconsistent with what they had told other contestants). It was as if these three people who make a living in the music industry did not know that country remake of the song existed and it was that song that Carrie was singing. I know nothing of music and it's sad when I know more than they do in this particular case. Sure, they're mouthpieces, but most of the time they seem to have some idea of what they're talking about.
I've had one song that keeps popping in my head that I absolutely love. It's called "Honey and the Moon"; I can't remember who sang it. It's a nice melodic song with great lyrics sung by one of those kinds of singers that makes people believe that anyone can sing. It's hard to describe, but the word soothing comes to mind. I've also been digging on a couple of Modest Mouse songs. I like pop stuff as much as the next guy, but songs like those really deserve to get some notice too.
Oh, and the best rap song ever? "Dirt of my Shoulder" by Jay-Z, though Eminem's Oscar winning (!) "Lose Yourself" is a close second.
