snarkyshark2 and I need your advice on obtaining Rock Band (2?). The most advanced gaming system we own is a Playstation 1 (yes, 1!), so we need to get that, as well. What is the cheapest and best way to go

I'm told the PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players on the market. I don't know if that's true, but I'm perfectly satisfied with its performance. That said, I hardly use it for anything else, because it still has a dismal selection of games.
The Wii has a much wider variety of games, (Super Mario Galaxy and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are particularly enjoyable), but the vast majority of Wii games are for children or casual gamers. If you're interested in the idea of a console game you can enjoy playing for ~10 minutes a day, this is good.
The XBox 360 has a reputation for a high likelihood of total system failure (typical Microsoft), though you can take it back to the store and replace it free of charge as often as you need to. To be fair, this hasn't happened to mine yet (though I've only had it since the end of December). Also, its graphics-processing capabilities are not quite as good as the PS3's. Its graphics are merely phenomenal. The Xbox has at least as much variety in game offerings as the Wii, though most of its games fit more traditional genres.
All three systems offer downloadable content--game add-ons, full games, game preview videos, etc. The game add-ons and full games are relatively cheap. On the Wii, you can download classic Nintendo and Super Nintendo games. On the XBox and PS3, you can download feature-length movies. If you have Netflix, you can view unlimited streaming videos through the XBox 360 (the streaming selection is a small subset of the Netflix library.. maybe 10,000 titles) at high quality (assuming you have a fast, steady internet connection).
