mrissa asks, scottjames  answers:

1. What beverages do you usually keep in your fridge?

In the upstairs fridge:
Decaf iced tea, Diet Pepsi and Diet 7-Up (or other clear soda beverage--I'm told they're pretty much all comparable), and sometimes Crystal Light Raspberry Lemonade.  Oh, and usually light cranberry juice.  And I think there's a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream that lives here as well.

In the downstairs fridge:
Guinness, Bass, Harp, Heineken, and because my wife really likes having spares of almost everything: light cranberry juice.  But there aren't vast quantities of any of the beer (I'm not breaking radio silence to admit to being an alcoholic, is the important information to take from this--I don't ever drink most of those brands).

2. What song lyrics in your personal music collection would you least like to have to explain to a curious grade-school-age kid? (This question was sparked by the realization that wanting to have a kid means that there will ideally be someone in my life to whom I have to explain "Longview." Crap.)

I don't own "Longview", and was neutral about that fact until a few minutes ago.

Anything by Nine Inch Nails, I think, could be problematic.

3. If you were trying to convince someone who was moving to Chicago that your neighborhood was a good place to live, what would you tell them about it?

It's the perfect combination of city and suburbs.  There's so much within walking distance: a grocery store, several bars/restaurants, an art center, a gym, a used bookstore up the street a bit, a park a little bit down the road.  All within, say, a 15 minute *walk*.  And you can drive to downtown in 20-30 minutes, which has a little (or a lot) of everything.  But my neighborhood is not so urban that you're stacked on top of your neighbor--they're mostly single-family homes with separate yards, garages, and neighbors who will look out for you without getting in your space.

4. Hidden songs/unlisted tracks on CDs: threat or menace?
[I'm assuming you meant 'treat or menace,' since 'threat or menace' isn't actually much of a choice]

And the answer is: menace.  Can you name three hidden/unlisted tracks on CDs that you actually look forward to listening to?  I don't think I can.  It's usually a half-baked song that you have to sit through five minutes of silence to get the pleasure of hearing.  Woo!  Sign me up!

5. Did your book about Guinness talk about the Guinness family's sad and somewhat involuntary connection to British fascism? And how Goebbels could not consistently spell "Guinness" even if it would have saved his shriveled horrible little soul? If not, why do you suppose not?

No, they have not yet.  Mostly because I'm just up to the point where WWI is about to start.  So far, it's pretty dry.  Very heavy on facts-and-figures.  More news as it develops.

Do you have 5 questions to ask me?  If so, the comment section below would the place I have set aside for just such a purpose.  Even if, by strange coincidence, you have some other number of questions.

Also, if you've got a hankering to answer 5 questions, I suppose I could potentially accomodate that, as well.  You know: it's a meme thing.  You know how this works.
