The Sistine Secrets: Michelangelo's Forbidden Messages in the Heart of the Vatican
by: Rabbi Benjamin Blech and Roy Doliner
In this book, the two authors claim that Michelangelo painted hidden and some not so hidden messages into the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Theories, mainly coming from the Jewish community and one from an American doctor, claim that Michelangelo hid references of the Talmud and Kabbalah into the fresco to spite the Pope at the time and to even encourage Jewish philosophies. While you certainly can't prove he did such, its not such a far tail when you read up on Michelangelo's history. It is well known that Michelangelo did not want to do the ceiling and that he complained often that he was just wasting his time that he could have otherwise spent on sculpting. Also he was a student of the school set up by Lorenzo de Medici and was at the center of the humanist movement and teachings....and supposedly Jewish and Kabbalah texts as well, at least to these guys.
If you study your "normal" Sistine chapel stories, you'll find that the planning of the ceiling was to show the coming of Christ and the salvation of humanity. While there is no image of Christ or Mary, Michelangelo uses stories from the Book of Genesis overall to show the creation of the world, heaven, and Adam&Eve, then the fall of Adam&Eve, and then the suffering of humanity shown by Noah and his children. All down the sides, who were supposed to be the Apostles, are the 12 prophets and Sibyls who foretold the coming of Christ. Human Synthesis on the dot and everything leading up to Christ...to even include his ancestors.
So one HUGE typology of the old testament leading and foretelling Christ.
Then come the stories that Michelangelo played a DaVinci Code. Their list includes the tree in the Garden of Eden being a fig tree instead of the apple tree, which is supposed to be a reference to the Talmud version(fig) not the Christian version(apple). The place where Mary was supposed to go, Jonah went and those hands and legs form two hebrew symbols. Other scenes such as David&Goliath and Judith&handmaids also have hebrew symbols formed from their figures.
The one proposed by an American doctor visiting the chapel is that in the Creation of Adam scene, and that he painted a cross-section of the human brain....something he learned from Jewish texts, at least to these guys. Read Kabbalah here.
Well the list goes on and my head hurts just typing this let alone reading it. Regardless of the fact that it might just be wild imagination or Jewish propaganda, I'm looking forward to reading this when my order comes in.
Oh and that little angel flipping off the Sibyl....thats to the Pope who sits directly from the angel when he gives Masses. Don't know if thats in the book, but its a rumor.
