My Saturday Off Work

Mar 29, 2008 17:39

I was off work today and decided to do nothing of any real value except for laundry and maybe dishes. So, I was watching Animal Planet, cuz that's what I do when I am hanging out with Sophie, and I got to thinking about something. They say things like, "The cats couldn't be socialized, so they were humanely euthanized." (In this case 89 of 90 cats were murdered) Think about that for a second. We kill animals because they don't like people. We kill them because they don't fit into our idea of what they should be. We kill them because they are dangerous to keep in our homes with us. Does that make any fucking sense at all? It is really pissing me off that I didn't think of this before, but it is really fucking stupid that we kill animals because they aren't good companions. If this how society wants to deal with problems like this, why don't we humanely euthanized people who aren't good companions? (Sorry Snic, but you'd be one of the first to go ;P) I watch shows like this all of the time and I had just accepted that some animals have to be put down for safety reasons. But, that's not true. I mean, if a dog doesn't want you to take it's food away and it is aggressive about saying, "Hey Fucker! I'm eating that, don't take it away," why not just leave the animal alone while it is eating? I get pissy if you take away from me food I'm eating, no one stabs me with a needle and says, "Kim you are food aggressive, so we've got to put you down." Why is there not a rescue set up for animals like this? Why are we killing animals, not for health reasons, not for food, but for the hell of it? We have two semi-feral cats that came into our shelter, Cuddles and Ebony. Ebony bit an employee, and was running around the hospital literally climbing the walls and bashing into windows and doors to get away from us. There was talk of euthanizing her because socializing her would be so close to impossible. I was so angry I told my supervisor, what good is taking these cats from the streets, where they aren't safe, to here if all we are going to do is kill them? At least out there they have a chance at a life. Well, we have been working with Cuddles and Ebony and they can be petted and handled now. Maybe not good for a house with children, but for an adult household, if they are together, I have hope for them. I'd take them myself, but my house mates probably would rebel. I have to try to put an end to this kind of euthanasia. It might take time and money to socialize animals, but that isn't a reason to kill them. There must be a better way to keep everyone safe.
