To Drop, Or Not To Drop....That Is The Conumdrum

Once again I find myself thinking about my work load in the fan fiction community, and that I really should wrap up/drop some things to have more time to actually make regular contributions to the scores of titles I have at the moment. Or move to more collaborations where I'm only scripting or plotting or at least working with someone else. The ( Read more... )

The longer you wait on a title, the less likely you'll be able to complete it.

Here's what I'd do -- write down every title you're currently working on. Write down the last time each of these titles had an issue released. Then rank them with the oldest release date first and the most recent release date last.

The book that you haven't released in the longest amount of time, try to write the next issue. If you keep hitting blocks, if you keep telling yourself, "I'd love to write this idea, BUT..." then drop that title. If it's mid-arc, either ask to remove the other issues of that arc or give the editor your plots.

It is possible to get burnt out on a book while still having ideas. I still have tons of ideas for Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Spider-Man, but I'm not able to motivate myself to write those books anymore. Having good ideas is one thing. But if you can't actually write about those ideas, then it's not fair to hold onto the book when other people may want a shot at it.

So push yourself to try to write the next issue. And if you can't, then don't make excuses for yourself, don't put it off any longer, just cut your losses and drop the book. Even if it means you drop every title you're currently writing, it may be good for you in the long-term to take a break.
