That's wonderful news, for sure! Of course I will join.
As a SpEd teacher I feel especially vulnerable to claims of professional misconduct made by students and their families so I join every group possible and try to be highly visible. If there's a union, I join it, if there's any professional group I'm a member, if there's a committee I volunteer. Way too many of the SpEd teachers I know have had to endure hearings based on illegitimate claims of inappropriate touching (we break up a lot of fights and take a lot of kids to the bathroom so the possibility of touching students is very high for many SpEd teachers) and all that jazz and I figure if I'm familiar to lots of people, it's less likely to happen to me. And if my peers know who I am, I'm more likely to have their support as well.
The whole coming out thing as a teacher is, of course, problematic but I'm pretty butch so it's usually just been tacitly accepted. (If you can't figure out I'm gay the minute you see me or within about two minutes of talking with me then you just don't want to know there are gay people on this planet, is how I figure it - folks have known I'm gay since I was about ten years old.) And there are a whole lot of gay SpEd teachers; not sure why and maybe that's just in Maryland. I haven't yet had issues, but it's something I try to keep in mind.
I just looked on googlemaps for Henderson county. My word, you must like the woods, huh? I guess I figured you for a city gal based on your screen name - Lorelei Lee moved in pretty cosmopolitan circles, if memory serves.
Yeah, Nashville is my idea of a compromise...Liz would prefer to be in the woods. And Nashville pushes my envelope of acceptable living situation - she's got an uphill battle.
Cool thing about Nashville is that we can at least think about the possibility of buying acreage with a little house on it out in the boonies as a vacation/weekend place. There's a lot of not very expensive homes with land in TN - not like here in Maryland at all. That might be an acceptable compromise for me.
I grew up in the woods, planning my escape to the big city pretty much every day. I like landscaping not farming, parks not forests; my idea of butch drag leans toward a tie, pants with a crease and polished dress shoes, not workboots, jeans and a dirty t-shirt.
So what's good in Nashville? I could use some inspiration, it seems pretty dull to me (I've visited two whole times so I admit I'm reacting entirely from bias here).
Gosh, where do I start? Do you like wine? There are lots of wineries within driving distance. Many of them have live music and wine festivals every weekend. Basically, you buy a bottle of wine, bring a lawn chair and sit in the vineyard and listen to music. There are many bars and clubs. The best lesbian bar in my opinion is The Lipstick. (www.thelipsticklounge.com). There are many gourmet restaurants in town, as well as home cookin' dives. The Titans are the football team, the Predators the hockey and the Sounds are the baseball team. There is the Tennessee Center from the Performing Arts for broadway traveling productions, local productions, ballet, and so on. The Schemerhorn Symphony is here for all your classical needs. We have B.B. Kings for the blues and jazz. There is the Music City Marathon every April if you're a runner. Gay Pride is the first Saturday in June. A local couple produces drag king shows around this time. And of course there is the Grand Ole' Opry, Fan Fair in June and The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Ryman Auditorium. There is gobs of live music CONSTANTLY in Nashville, from rap to classical.
There are many open churches in Nashville too. I'm a lapsed Catholic, I don't attend any services.
You're gonna love it here!
I think I'm beginning to sound like the Nashville Chamber of Commerce.
More like the Welcome Wagon and I really appreciate it, thanks!
We definitely like eating and drinking. I suppose I'll have to turn in my butch membership card, but I only like watching women's sports and baseball so don't much care about that. We're old, so a lot of bars and clubs are frankly a drag (you kids and your dang loud music!) but we'll keep trying in case we find some place comfy for drinking. I love classical music, so that's great news. Gay Pride will probably be welcome as all get out by the time it rolls around again.
I know I'm being whiny and silly about this move. Heck, I've lived in San Francisco, Portland (OR), Albany (NY), near Hartford and now here. I think I'm just kind of tired of the whole moving thing. It doesn't help that I pretty much liked where I was working and was looking forward to hanging out in our finally-fixed up house and not going to any more graduate classes.
It'll be fine - and you certainly make it seem a lot more appealing.
Well I completely forgot about the Women's Football team, we have one of those too. Not to mention the women's softball teams. The Lipstick's team has won the championship.
I can't stress enough how much you'll enjoy the Lip if you go, it's not a club..club, but a neighborhood bar. Go. You'll like it.
How old are you and your gf? What does she do for a living. My gf is a teacher too: High School Chemistry.
52760 is my birthdate so I just turned 48 this year. Liz is 45. And neighborhood bar is just what we're after.
Liz is a dog trainer and she's already got some leads on working with some boutique-y pet/dog stores in Nashville but part of why we're moving is she's losing interest in the business. If you've ever watched trainers on TV you'll know that really one is working with the pet's owners, not the pets so much and Liz is kind of sick of training people. She'll be doing transcription, which she's done quite a bit (and now I'm doing it during this weird time of not working but needing wads of cash)and perhaps working with her sister the real estate agent (family is the main reason she wants to move down there).
Whoa, chemistry??? She'll never be wanting for a job I would guess! How long have you been together? Liz and I have been together eleven years now. And we've lived in, let me see, five different houses in that time.
We've been together for 3 years in December. I'm 37, she's 42. Our birthdays are one day apart.. I was born on Nov. 8, she Nov.9.
We have a little girl, she's 8 and going into the 3rd grade, her dad is a soldier with the 101st airborne at Ft. Campbell (he's in Afghanistan).
Dog trainer..lol... we were just at pet smart yesterday talking with a trainer about how to stop our schnauzer from being so anti-social and scared around strangers.
