I think I'm going to have sanders268  and fonticulus become my life coaches. They were both spot on about going to the running store and getting decent shoes. They were also correct in their assertion that the store would not be filled with hateful, marathon running ogres. I'm pretty sure I was pre-emptively painting the store employees with the brush dipped in the  ( Read more... )

I was wondering if you got shoes and how everything went. I am so happy you had a positive experience! I knew that you would.

If you want to try a less spendy option for inserts than the ones at the running store, I use Dr. Scholl's heel pain relief ones in my shoes -- plantar fasciitis in both feet, yay -- and they have served me well all through training and three 5K races, including a trail run from hell (in a good way). You can get them at any drugstore, Target, Wal-Mart, etc.

I remembered last night that I meant to recommend some C25K podcasts if you wanted to mix up your music choices. My favorites are:

Carli's Running Into Shape: http://runningintoshape.com/5k-training-downloads/

Suz's Couch to 5K: http://www.kissmyblackass.org/?page_id=86

Go Nicole Yourself!: http://gonicoleyourself.blogspot.com/2008/06/couch-to-5k-podcast-page.html

All of them are free to download and have voice prompts to let you know when to switch from walking to running so you don't have to keep your eye on the clock or a watch.

Keep up the awesome work!

And shoes that make your toes numb at the end of a run are too small! You need to buy them a little larger than your regular shoe size because your feet swell when you run. I am sure Matthew told you that, though. :)
