I admit to being a bit of a fangirl. My fangirl tendencies encompass writers (David Sedaris), artists (Andrew Wyeth and Dale Chihuly), but the truly rabid fandom is reserved for musicans, though my stalking tendencies of Andrew Wyeth have borne fruit on 2 occassions. That poor little old man looked so freaked out when I squeed at him at the Brandywine River Museum the first time I visited there.
There is the ongoing Duran Duran fandom, though I am not nearly as bad about that particular addiction as my dear friend with whom I saw the band in March. For that concert, I spent an assload of cash to buy VIP tickets, knowing it was a one time deal. She, on the other hand, has gone a bit out of her 34 year old mind and is following the band. She's been to 3 concerts in the past week, all with VIP tickets. And she plans to see several more before this tour ends. Again, all with VIP tickets. I'm certainly not one to cast aspersions and I understand her need to do this.
I also harbor a serious love for certain wee Scottish folk singer, Dougie MacLean. I've been known to drive upwards of 5 hours to see him locally. Who the hell am I kidding? I flew to NJ to see him perform at an incredible old stone church in Morristown in 1997. Oh, seriously, who the hell am I kidding? When I studied abroad in England in 1994, my class schedule was structured so I could spend every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Dunkeld, Scotland to see/hear Dougie perform in his hometown.
But my one true musican love, the one I am powerless to refuse, the one I would be willing to go into hock to see live is Lyle Lovett. Or as he is known in our house, "the only man Michelle would be willing to break her vows for." In fact, we saw Lyle in concert 2 days before we were married. I told Stephen that should Lyle happen to look out into the 3rd row and be overcome with desire for the big girl who was sending him looks of pure lust, the wedding was off and I would follow Lyle wherever he wanted to lead me. Stephen laughed, but he knew I wasn't entirely kidding. Last year, I planned our annual vacation to Oregon to coincide with Lyle's performance in Portland. Several years ago, he played a show at a casino about an hour south of here and the seating was festival style. I took half a day off from work and was first in line at the door by 3 p.m. The show started at 8 p.m. I don't think my mother, who attended the show with me, has forgiven me yet for withholding that particular part of the plans.
All of this is leading up to the fact that I will be seeing my man on September 9 right here in Cincinnati! The tickets went on sale at 11 a.m. and by 11:04, I had my tickets secured and was trying to be circumspect with the happy dancing in my office because this place? This place does not induce the happy dancing.
But Lyle does!
