It's been a while since I posted. I've been reading lj regularly, but between work, girl, console gaming, reading, eating, playing music, cleaning and sometimes bowling, there just hasn't been a whole lot of time for other things.
I've also been thinking a lot about
what it is to blog. Something I've realized about myself, is that I'm not very interested in relating short little quips or anecdotes from my life, I prefer talking about ideas and how to do things. Tonight I had an idea that blogging is much like the old days of usenet news, but where usenet was a collection of lists about general subjects, with threads about particular ideas or questions, the blogsphere is a collection of lists of particular people, with threads that are often about particular events. Especially on livejournal.
It's not that anything is wrong with discussing daily-life events, after all, you're always an expert in the subject matter, it's just that because it's all about individual experience there isn't a whole lot of utility in knowledge gained, except in a social sphere. Usenet engendered a different kind of discourse that was more idea-based than narritive in nature. But blogging doesn't have to be strictly about day-to-day experiences.
There are all kinds of really interesting, artistic, thought provoking blogs and even blogs that question the meaning of what it means to blog. There are
cooking blogs,
photo blogs,
technical blogs,
news blogs,
humor blogs,
celebrity blogs, and
many author blogs. Whew, I tired myself out digging up all of those links.
I'm thinking about enabling google indexing of my blog (and mabye sending updates to
technorati) to draw a larger reader base, and then writing about more technical and ponderous things. What do you think? Should I change the format of this blog, or setup a new blog somewhere else? Any suggestions for other blog spots or (non-PHP) software?
