Arundhati Roy and Other Small Things

May 25, 2006 16:10

I caught part of an interview with Arundhati Roy on KRFC on Tuesday. I'm currently reading her novel, The God of Small Things. Since gaining fame as an internationally read author, she's gone on to become pretty politically outspoken, and her most recent book An Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire, like the interview, looks like it offers a liberal critique on, and insights into the world's view on, the Bush administration, the occupation of Iraq, and globalization.

Video, podcast and transcripts of the interview are available.

I think my favorite part was when asked what she thought about a clip of Bush talking about the victory of the democratic elections in Iraq, she said, "How can one respond? I just keep wishing there would be a laugh track, you know, on the side of these speeches."

Speaking of globalization, I recently purchased a small moleskine notebook for keeping in my laptop bag to encourage me to write more poetry. I also discovered a really cool wikipedia entry about poetic form that covers more verse styles that I knew existed along with entries about meter and types of rhymes. I'm looking forward to trying my hand at some englyns. In the meantime, here's a geeky epic couplet about Schroedinger's cat.

Finally, I have play lists from the last two times I DJed at Static. The (lack of) response I've gotten to previous set list posts has made me think that most of you aren't very interested tho, and frankly, I don't blame you. If anyone would like me to post them, please leave a comment along those lines.
