Pondering Software Patents

After reading an article about patent reform, I'm in a tizzy. At first, I was happy to see that maybe the archaic patent system will be reformed. A system that is supposed to encourage technical innovation, but winds up mostly protecting multinational corporations. But then I wonder, why do people apply patents to software ( Read more... )

I agree with you completely.

BTW, I've got some Mac issues and I was wondering if you could give me some advice...?

I don't consider myself a Mac guru, but who knows, I might know an answer to your problem and if not, I know about http://www.google.com/mac. What's your Mac issue?

Oh I just need to remove two OSes I currently have on the computer (it was setup with OSX and OS9 running in the background so that I could run software on it that had different requirements) and put Panther in their place, but since I'm as FAR from a guru you can get I'm not exactly sure where to start.

First make backups! If you have a second system with room, I would reccomend making a complete backup (if it's another OSX system or a Linux system, I can give you the commands you'll need). If not, just save your important files to CD or something.

When you boot from the Panther CD, on one of the first screens, there's an installer menu in the upper left corner from which you can select the Disk Utility. From that you will be able to erase and repartition your drive into a single large partition.

Here's a link I found discussing this very same issue.

Thanks. Hopefully they will come up with a sane solution in the software patent debate in the EU. Only a few countries seem to have clue so far, but sanity could still win there.
