noitanigami, you can just skip right over this ;)
From rotwag 1) Total number of books owned:
Four bookshelves and several boxes full, enough to be a major pain whenever I move. Probably 500-700 individual volumes.
2) The last book I bought:
I had an extra 10% off coupon, so I got two books last time:
Middlesex by
Jeffrey Eugenides (author of
The Virgin Suicides)
Collected Fictions -
Jorge Luis Borges 3) The last book I read:
Ubik -
Philip K Dick, part of
Counterfeit Unrealities.
4) Five books that mean a lot to me:
- The Hitchiker's Guide quintilogy - Douglas Adams
I used to read the whole series whenever I'd get really depressed. Which was about once a year for a while there. Laughter is good medicine. - The Basic Kafka - Franz Kafka
Kafka is an amazingly gifted, twisted, and imaginative author. This is a really nice collection of his short stories, including "The Metamorphosis" and "A Hunger Artist". - Unix in a Nutshell (System V Edition, 2nd Edition) - David Gilly and the staff of O'Reilly & Associates
This edition is long out of print, but was a vast tome of knowledge when I started learning Unix at the Colorado School of Mines on their AIX terminal systems. - Kidnapped - Robert Louis Stevenson
My grandfather gave this book to me for Xmas a few years ago after I asked for classic literature. I was a little dissapointed at first that he got me a "kids" book, but it was a breathtakingly fun read, especially since there seems to be a little sailor in my blood. I later asked him what made him decide to get that book for me, and he said that he remembered enjoying it when he was young. - The Difference Engine - William Gibson, Bruce Sterling
Historical fiction about the dawn of the computer age happening 100 years early, had Charles Babbage's mechanical computer been perfected. Steampunk by two of cyberpunk's greatest authors.
Users I'd like to see carry this on:
