Another busy week

Dec 12, 2004 06:03

This time it was mostly Grand Theft Auto Vice City and several big projects that I'm working on simultaneously at work. I already beat Tony Hawk Underground on beginner mode (yes, I'm a pansy when it comes to video games), it only took about a week. I wish they had different stories for each difficulty level. I like playing video games with an immersive environment, exploring new areas, figuring different things out.

One of my computers went toes up on Friday with motherboard problems. If it was one of my lesser-used computers, it wouldn't be such a big deal, but this was my fastest computer outside of the company laptop I use. An AMD Athalon 700. 2001 technology. Turn of the millennium stuff.

I decided that it was time to upgrade to a modern system. Afterall, I make my living with computers, I should have a modern computer, right? And besides, I really want to play Doom III, especially since they released a Linux version. I want to encourage game manufacturers that make games that work on open source platforms.

So, I went out and dropped about $350 to get the parts I needed to make a decent system. New MSI motherboard, AMD Sempron 2500, 512MB RAM, 550W power supply, the rest I have covered. Merry yule to me. Only the motherboard I got doesn't work. Gaah! I wasted most of my day trying to trouble-shoot it, and found that it was DOA, won't even post.

skunk237 also stopped by with his computer and I poked around at it until I figured out that he had a bad processor. It was a stroke of luck that our motherboards and processors were compatible with each other's, because it helped me to figure out what was wrong with both systems. Unfortunately, we both have to wait until Monday to get the parts to make working systems -- all the parts stores are closed until then. Now my fastest computer is the PowerMac G3 (circa 1999) followed by my two PII 400MHz (circa 1998), and last on the list is my web server running on an increasingly-difficult-to-find-parts-for Pentium 200MHz (circa 1997). The 90's still live on in my place.

compute, work, friends
