Me Here. Recommending an old TV show

Oct 04, 2008 12:18

Usually I come up with something pithy that happens to me during the day but by the time I want to post, I shrug and leave it alone. Possibly might still do that but let's see what I can remember.

A couple days ago, I was trying to figure out where I saw Joanna Lumley from, and yes I know her from Absolutely Fabulous but I know I have seen her as a kid so I went to the part of what I called the triumvirate: Google, Wikipedia and Youtube. I went to the last one figuring I can track it down by going through her name and work my way into the past. I finally reach to a show I heard of, but I don't remember watching, but it was great and I can imagine children of the early 80's getting frighten the begueezes out of this series. In the comments of the show they mention X-Files and the Mulder and Scully relationship but I know the X-Files was in part inspired by Kolcheck: The Nightstalker but watching the series, it has the same dark atmospheric feeling as the X-Files.

Oh, I didn't mention the show: It starts off like this:

(70's graphics, the starscreen background, you know the ones we grew up with as the screensaver in every early computer monitor to keep your screen from dying on you. And then the booming voice.)

ALL IRREGULARITIES WILL BE HANDLED BY THE FORCES CONTROLLING EACH DIMENSION

TRANSURANIC HEAVY ELEMENTS MAY NOT BE USED WHERE THERE IS LIFE

MEDIUM ATOMIC WEIGHTS ARE AVAILABLE GOLD, LEAD, COPPER, JET, DIAMOND, RADIUM, SAPPHIRE, SILVER AND STEEL

SAPPHIRE AND STEEL HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED

The Show is called Sapphire and Steel. It apparently ran between 1979-1982 and starred Joanna Lumley and David McCallum are alien investigators Sapphire and Steel who were assigned to protect the Earth and deal with the ruptures in Time, though Time itself was the constant enemy... (from Youtube dalek64) There were six assignments and you can watch the whole series if you search dalek64. I love the creepiness, the darkness and the characters who look human but that's all. Ah, man if you watch assignment #2: The Railway Station, it them at their creepiest and least human, especially the end.

Quick thoughts: Steel is an asshole, take that how you wish and he would probably agree with me completely. Anything to get the job done, he will do it and I mean anything. Sapphire, while sympathetic at times with the characters they interact while on the job can be distant and completely indifferent to those same people. Silver, god I love Silver, while he is the similiar with Sapphire and do carry on a healthy flirtation when they meet much to Steel's aggravation, he comes off as fun and focused on the job (He is a specialist/technician, while Sapphire and Steel are operators/field agents) he's not bitchy as Steel comes off.

Joanna and David are I hate to say this because it sounds so... teenagerish, but "they were hot, I mean really really hot."

I think an angel has lost their wings.

I can't embedded the show so here's the link, Assignment 1.1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAMorsWt4W8
and because of accents or they way it was cut there was a sentence I couldn't hear so I found a site that has transcripts: http://www.fortunecity.com/tatooine/halojones/75/saphsteel/saphsteel.html

After two days, you know in the end after watching it all, it wasn't the show I thought I was looking for but then I thought Dempsey and Makepeace, who remembers that show.... Anybody???

Oh well, after more checking I know now it wasn't her (two blondes, hey I was a kid you know) so in the end I'm going with the New Avengers for the answer. I know she was in that so that's all folks.

Wait!!! I didn't tell you the best part, so I went to watching a whole season of Never Mind the Buzzcocks (Music game show) on Youtube (Okay... jenoofer I see what you mean about the haircut, its not bad, bad.) and they have a segment where they show the audience a music video and the team has to figure out from a line that they are given, who was in the band and there was a song that stop me and I had to look for the actual song and somebody on imeem had it on their list; it's is called "You're Not Alone" by Olive and so everytme I started listening to it I did what I always do I started building a story within the Sapphire and Steel Universe.

This will always lead to a dissapointing madness.

What's worse is that I have that song on the computer, it's been a while since I cleaned my computer out.

Now I am done. Coming up next: Craig Ferguson.
