TVD 2.14 - Crying Wolf - Reaction/Review
Okay, this is really really rushed and mostly bullet points. I don’t really have time to write deep thinky thoughts because I have to go to bed really early today. Besides, next ep will get deep thinky thoughts, I’m already exploding in excitement over the promos and may have already started writing a fic based off the promos. TVD DRIVES ME TO MADNESS, OKAY?
+ Tyler, I kinda wanna shake you. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING, TYLER? Why do you suddenly go along with the plans of THESE PEOPLE YOU’VE JUST MET and kidnap a girl you’ve known since you were in diapers? WHY DO YOU TRUST THESE SUPER SKETCHY PEOPLE? Just because they are ~werewolves~ and your kind? Brady threatened you if you didn’t go through kidnapping Elena, Tyler. GROW A BRAIN CELL. I KNOW YOU CAN BE BETTER THAN THIS, TYLER! I KNOW YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS!
Also, ENOUGH WITH YOUR, “I CAN’T BE LIKE THIS, I HAVE TO BREAK THE CURSE!” thoughts. YOU’RE A WEREWOLF, DEAL WITH IT. Your transformation was difficult, yes, but nut up or shut up. So many werewolves before you have transformed and went through the same thing over and over, and they managed. YOU CAN MANAGE TOO. YOU’LL GET USED TO IT. JUST ACCEPT THAT YOU ARE A WEREWOLF, TYLER. ARE YOU TELLING ME GEORGE SANDS IS MORE HARDCORE THAN YOU? Omg, George Sands needs to teach you how to be a proper werewolf. Nina can come too, and smack you over the head when you act dumb.
That being said, ELENA’S MAGICAL EMPATHY HUGS CURE ALL *_____* (that is, however, until he got the urge to run away with Jules. Really, Jules? Super sketchy Jules who had Caroline tortured? REALLY? I am going to fanwank he’s going off with Jules because he wants to know what is he supposed to do the next time he transforms since he has no Lockwood cellar to do it in anymore (wait until you find out she no problem eating people, Tyler)).
+ I really really wanted to like the Tyler and Matt scene/apology at the end! I really did! But then it was all about how Caroline is awesome and was there for Tyler and “you should date and treat her well.” I have two problems with this. 1) I generally hate the whole ~you deserve her~ stuff. IT’S NOT ABOUT WHO DESERVES WHO, IT’S ABOUT WHO CHOOSES WHO (though it was kinda cute that Tyler was being a matchmaker). 2) These are two bffs-who sure, maybe have been on the rocks, but they’ve still known each other all their lives-and Tyler is leaving for an indeterminate period of time. And all he talks about is Caroline? Not, “YOU’RE MY BRO, I’M SORRY I’VE BEEN TREATING YOU KINDA SHITTY, BUT YOU’RE STILL MY BRO.” Nothing relating to their friendship? *sadface* THEY USED TO BE FRIENDS, SHOW.
(I swear, this review is mostly positive. Really. I LIKED THIS EPISODE A LOT. I just have a lot of ~feelings~)
+ This episode was basically Stefan and Elena are the cutest. Seriously. FROM THE START OF THE EPISODE, THEY WERE CUTE. Elena falls out of bed (btw, opening with girl puppy pile on the bed? A+) and she and Stefan are adorable on the phone. And then Elena’s little joke about how Stefan can’t come in the Lakehouse (the scene on the dock was a little much, BUT I BET IT WOULD MAKE AWESOME ICONS. And in retrospect with the episode’s ending in mind, kinda depressing. Also, I really like that Stefan brought up in the whole “our future, you possibly turning” thing, as delicately as possible. I’m glad they eventually plan on having that conversation) and then Stefan cooking while Elena watched. And Elena thinks Stefan wearing her great grandfather’s jacket is hot (she has a thing for flannel, apparently). And then making out and looking like they were about to have wall sex before Stefan noticed the hollow wall. I’M SORRY, I DON’T REALLY HAVE DEEP THOUGHTS ON THEM RIGHT NOW, THEY ARE JUST THE FUCKING CUTEST. I AM OVERWHELMED BY THE CUTE.
THEN ELENA STABS A WEREWOLF AND STEFAN RIPS OUT BRADY’S HEART AND I LIKE THAT EVEN THOUGH ELENA IS HUMAN, THEY ACT KINDA LIKE A BATTLE COUPLE *__* PARTNERS.
(side note, but Stefan ripping out Brady’s heart = made of win. I’M GLAD YOU GOT TO RIP OUT SOMEONE’S HEART, STEFAN. I think that’s the first time he’s done it XD I would have preferred if Caroline ate Brady, but I’m cool with her pseudo big brother doing it too :D).
Also, Elena smelling her mom’s perfume, Elena having so many memories of her parents in the Lakehouse, and how clearly her parents’ death still affects her? ;____;
+ Oh jeez, Damon, you are a being fucking creeper. Like, I can’t help but compare this to his treatment of Caroline in early season one and it’s somehow worse and better at the same time. Better because Damon isn’t verbally abusing Andie and he’s treating her decently-not kindly per say, but not with any unnecessary cruelty. But it’s worse because…he’s compelling her to love him. Which is fucking creepy. I understand his treatment of Caroline, because he was behaving like a predator-Caroline wasn’t a person to him, she was prey and food and a way into Founding family events. I get that. Andie, however, he’s using as some kind of sounding board/impromptu therapist/person to share his feelings with (but because he’s Damon, HE MUST ERASE THEIR MEMORY SO IT DOESN’T COUNT) and he’s compelling her to love him and it’s just creepy. It’s like, because Damon is now feelings his feelings and developing into someone who’s more aware of his humanity (even if he doesn’t like it), so his actions with Andie are more humane than usual but because it’s Damon and he’s massively fucked in the head, it somehow gets perverted into something twisted and messed-up.
Speaking of, I kinda had a problem with Alaric’s, “please don’t kill her.” Or rather, I have a problem with the fact that he’s otherwise okay with the fact that Damon is compelling her and using her as food and sex. It’s not that I mind that he would eventually reach the point where he says to Damon, “just don’t kill her, please,” I just wish he’d been more conflicted about it; being Damon’s friend fucks with your moral standards, SHOW THAT CONFLICT. I feel like I missed a moment in their relationship where Alaric got morally skewed enough so that he’d settle for Damon not killing someone rather than trying to make him stop entirely. (Perhaps he was drunk. I could buy that. Alaric seems to have turned into the town drunk lately, after Damon. No really, WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME HE WAS AT SCHOOL?)
That being said, DAMON AND ALARIC ARE THE BEST BFFS EVER (well, after Stefan and Caroline :D).
+ Speaking of Damon, I find it really hilarious that my reaction to Caroline being tortured last week was “OMG HDU HDU MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP CAAAAAAAROOOOOLIIIIIIIIIIINE, DIE IN ALL FIRES, BRADY & JULES *TWITCH TWITCH TWITCH*
My reaction to Damon getting tortured is, “Oh, he’ll be fine.” XD It’s karmic backlash anyway, I’m sure he’s done something to deserve getting tortured.
That being said, I have no clue how I’m supposed to find these werewolves sympathetic, if they’re running around trying to sacrifice teenage girls (btw, I find it kinda incomprehensible how all of these werewolves figured out the plan to break the moonstone so quickly. That was so fast. THANK YOU, STEVIE THE EXPOSITION WEREWOLF) and killing bystander humans like Alaric. And then I get upset that the werewolves are pretty much not being painted sympathetically, they are all pretty much outright villains, and that bothers me. Why can’t werewolves be like vampires-as in, there is a whole lot of them, all of varying personalities and moral codes? *side-eyes show*
(I also find it incomprehensible how apparently, Stevie-and other werewolves-knew Mason was dating Katherine but didn’t say anything to anyone, even though all werewolves hate vampires apparently. But these werewolves can’t have that much seething hatred for vampires, because they would have killed Katherine on sight, or tracked her down home and killed or, at least pulled Mason aside and smacked him for dating one. Also, did Stevie said Mason brought Katherine to the bar? I am really hoping that there are a select number of werewolves that hang at a bar, rather than a bar for werewolves. I THOUGHT YOU GUYS WERE RARE. THIS ISN’T TRUE BLOOD, YOU KNOW.
+ Elijah continues to be a sly-ass motherfucker in a suit (and Alaric likes his hair!). And I love the scene where Elijah rips out hearts like it’s no big deal and Damon makes this approving look. THAT MAN APPRECIATES PROPER VIOLENCE. IT’S TOO BAD YOU PLAN ON SACRIFICING ELENA, ELIJAH, DAMON MIGHT OTHERWISE KEEP YOU AROUND.
+ Hai John. You are still kinda of a dick, but please continue to insinuate that you’ll tell Jenna about what’s going on. Or, you know, ACTUALLY TELL JENNA INSTEAD OF SAYING YOU’LL TELL JENNA.
+ BONNIE AND CAROLINE FUN TIEMZ *_________* THEY NEED TO HANG OUT MORE OFTEN. Caroline thinks Bonnie’s magic is hot! CAROLINE AND BONNIE ARE GETTING ALONG AGAIN. I am still going all O.o at when exactly they resolved their issues and I know that’s lazy writing but then I go LALALALA, BONNIE AND CAROLINE ARE FRIENDS AGAIN AND IT’S A BEAUTIFUL THING.
Also, I really love that Bonnie totally extracted information from Luka by drugging him and going into his head against his will. 1) it was badass. You are so badass, Bonnie. Plz continue to be badass *___* 2) How very morally gray of you, Bonnie, I approve. I like this trend that whenever Bonnie does morally sketchy things, it’s always in the service of the greater good (lying to Elena about dispelling the Gilbert device in order to save innocent people, delivering Mason to Damon because Mason was a bad dude, this thing with Luka to save Elena’s life). I ALSO LIKE THAT BONNIE DOES MORALLY GRAY THINGS FOR HER BFF.
+ Also, I think I’m the only person in the world who likes Luka /o\ KLAUS HAS HIS SISTER, I FEEL REALLY BAD FOR HIM. Okay, he lied to Bonnie, and both he and Jonas seem to be on board with the “sacrifice Elena, kill Klaus after” plan but he’s just a kid and his sister is in Klaus’s clutches. HE’S DOING IT FOR HIS SISTER, I RESPECT THE FUCK OUT OF THAT. Generally, in tv shows, my moral code is you can do whatever sketchy things and I’m cool with it if it’s for family \o/
+ I randomly loved the Damon & Stefan talk over the phone. “Try not to get yourself killed.” *___* OH HAI, I LIKE IT WHEN YOU GUYS ACT LIKE BROTHERS. They’ve progressed so much since the first season! :D
+ Elena’s deathwish is breaking my heart. Like, I know she won’t really die because she’s the protagonist, but the fact that she’s resolving to die? That’s she’s basically making preparations, that this is essentially her goodbye tour (The Lakehouse trip totally comes off as visiting the place she and her parents spent a lot of time at before she dies), that she’s seventeen years old and feels this is the best course of action? BREAKS MY FUCKING HEART. ELENA, YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE DEATHWISHES, IT MAKES ME SADFACE. MY FACE WAS STEFAN’S FACE, OKAY? I AM AS DISTRESSED ABOUT THIS AS STEFAN IS.
And oh god, their fight at the end. “IT’S NOT HEROIC, IT’S TRAGIC.” YES, STEFAN, YOUR THOUGHTS ARE MY THOUGHTS. Like, I get why Elena is doing this-she heard Katherine’s story, she knows Klaus will kill her family if she tries to run, she knows there’s no real escape from Klaus. And to her, dying so ALL her friends and family live seems like a fair trade. I get that.
BUT OMG, I AM ON STEFAN’S SIDE. ELENA, YOU CANNOT JUST GIVE UP. YOU CAAAAAAN’T. YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO LIVE FOR! And your friends, your family-Jeremy, Bonnie, Caroline, Damon, Alaric, John, Stefan-THEY’RE ALL FIGHTING FOR YOU. IF YOU DIE, HOW DO YOU THINK STEFAN WILL HANDLE IT? JEREMY? God knows, Jeremy can’t take losing more people. WHAT WILL THIS DO TO JENNA, OMG. How will she feel if Elena dies on her watch? THAT WOULD BE HORRIBLE. Elena did not let Stefan die when he wanted to in Blood Brothers and there’s no way Stefan is just going to be okay with Elena sacrificing herself, no matter how practical her plan is. There is really no way anyone will approve of that plan-not Bonnie or Caroline or Jeremy or Damon or John. It’s easy to lie down and die when you don’t have to deal with the consequences and fallout of your actions, with people’s pain and grief afterwards-living is always harder. OH GOD, ELENA, I GET YOUR PLAN, BUT OMG, IT HURTS ME. YOU ARE TOO YOUNG TO BE PLANNING YOUR DEATH.

ALSO! Good job show, for making Elena and Stefan have a fight that feels organic, true to the characters, both have good points, and doesn’t feel like manufactured drama. A+

God knows, Jeremy can’t take losing more people. WHAT WILL THIS DO TO JENNA, OMG. How will she feel if Elena dies on her watch? THAT WOULD BE HORRIBLE. Elena did not let Stefan die when he wanted to in Blood Brothers and there’s no way Stefan is just going to be okay with Elena sacrificing herself, no matter how practical her plan is. There is really no way anyone will approve of that plan-not Bonnie or Caroline or Jeremy or Damon or John. It’s easy to lie down and die when you don’t have to deal with the consequences and fallout of your actions, with people’s pain and grief afterwards-living is always harder. OH GOD, ELENA, I GET YOUR PLAN, BUT OMG, IT HURTS ME. YOU ARE TOO YOUNG TO BE PLANNING YOUR DEATH.
(though, I do feel compelled to say, WHERE WERE YOU WHEN DEAN WINCHESTER NEEDED YOUR REASON, STEFAN?)
ALSO! Good job show, for making Elena and Stefan have a fight that feels organic, true to the characters, both have good points, and doesn’t feel like manufactured drama. A+
