The Arizona highway stretched out far beyond them, a never-ending stretch of road in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but cacti and red-orange mesas. The little rest stop they parked at had a shitty bathroom, the kind that obviously hadn’t seen a janitor in ages. It had run out of toilet seat covers and Kat really didn’t want to sit down to piss. The sink was rusty and spewed brown-tinged water and the tile on the walls needed a good wash. Kat wondered if this bathroom was even in service; maybe someone had just forgotten to put up an out-of order sign.

But the rest stop must be legit, because it had working vending machines, even if the soda was warm and the candy bars stale. Kat loaded them up on food (ha ha, what a joke to call this food) while Jo did her business in the bathroom, the sun glinting off the steel of the gun tucked into the back of Jo’s pants, visible only when her shirt rode up.

This was a dirty, desolate place, nothing but road and land and rock and fucking cacti on all sides, the ground colorless and barren. Nothing and no one but them.

There was no one else around for miles and Kat thought that maybe she should feel isolated, like the world would swallow her up when no one was looking, like she’ll lose herself in all this wide open space and no one would ever find her. That’s how she used to feel, back when it was just her and a shotgun and some cash.

Now it’s Jo and her truck and more weapons than she could count. Now it’s Jo-a mess of golden blonde hair, a sharp small grin and a steady hand. Now it’s Jo, a warm solid presence at Kat’s back and it didn’t matter that they hadn’t known each other long, having someone like Jo at her side, strong and competent, made the road a whole lot more bearable, easier to handle; Kat didn’t feel like she’d get lost in it all and slip through the cracks.

Kat got in the passenger seat, squirming as she planted herself down. It was a hot day. It was always hot in Arizona and Kat was in shorts and a tank top but she still couldn’t keep cool. She could feel the leather of the seat sticking to her legs, a damp patch of sweat forming on the small of her back, the stray strands of hair from her ponytail sticking to the nape of her neck. It was stuffy in the car and the air conditioning in Jo’s truck was broken at the moment; the whole thing seemed orchestrated specifically to piss Kat off. She was already slightly on edge anyway and Kat just wanted to relax in a pool or lie down in bed while a fan blew cool air her way.

Jo came back to the car and slammed the door shut, growling out, “Fucking Arizona,” under her breath.

“We still got a hundred miles to go,” Kat responded automatically; she wasn’t sure why, she knew Jo knew that and she was sure the repeat information would just make her irritable. Well, more irritable.

“Hrrm,” Jo grunted, with a curt nod. She was a little taciturn today, the heat getting to her. Kat stared at her, Jo a solid figure in the harsh light of the sun, her hair somehow even blonder, skin gleaming with sweat, her normally soft features set in a frown.

Jo’s not as distance as she was when Kat first met her, warmed up quite a bit to the new hunter but she still wasn’t quite sure how to deal with a cranky Jo. They were still getting used to each other; Jo didn’t adjust straight away to a stranger sharing her space and neither did Kat for that matter. But they didn’t really chafe against each other anymore and they’ve settled into some sort of rhythm, however bumpy.

So Kat leaned across the seat, sliding her arm around Jo’s slender shoulders and kissed the side of her mouth, gently, meant to comfort not entice. She wasn’t quite sure what she was thinking, or whether it was a good idea or not but it seemed like the thing to do.

Jo didn’t move for a minute, save for her eyes widening ever so slightly and Kat had a moment of sheer panic, that maybe Jo didn’t want to kiss her, that maybe those few nights when they shared a bed together and rolled around in the sheets, making each other moan was just a way to pass the time, or didn’t mean anything or meant something completely different to Jo Harvelle. Maybe Kat had horrifically misread the situation and yeah, panic.

But Jo turned her head, pressed her lips against hers, opening them and they’re kissing for real now, with tongue and everything. It’s not urgent or passionate or anything like that, but it’s slow and languid and happy. They were getting used to this too; this was still all so new and Kat still felt the rush of exploration as she kissed Jo’s lips, still kissed slightly shy, like she expected Jo to turn her away. Jo tasted like vanilla chapstick and blueberry from the muffin she had for breakfast and yet musky sweet underneath it all and Kat could do this all day.

But they didn’t have all day-they had places to be, shit to do, monsters to kill and a case to get to-so eventually Jo pulled back. Kat entertained the idea of maybe doing more, of stripping Jo and laying her down in the car and exploring her body, tracing the scars and sliding her fingers in-a voice in the back of Kat’s mind encouraged her, saying stuff like there’s no one around, it’s just us, only us-but it was hot enough so the heat would be uncomfortable to downright painful and maybe they should find a bed somewhere instead.

“So, what was that about?” Jo asked, but mouth was set in something approaching a smile, and her tongue was poking out of her mouth slightly. Kat figured that was a good sign.

“What do you mean?”

“I’m not exactly used to random kisses out of nowhere,” Jo chuckled.

“Well, you looked like you needed it,” Kat said and she couldn’t help the red flush creeping in her cheeks. She wasn’t sure what it was about Jo that made her all shy and turned her into a blushing virgin-Kat’s no virgin, lost it in high school years ago but Jo was girl, no, a woman and that was just all kinds of new and different and exciting.

“I looked like I needed to be kissed?” Jo asked, one eyebrow arching up, her lips twitching upwards in a smirk, a light dancing behind her eyes.

“You have pretty mouth,” Kat responded with the first thing that came to her mind. Jo laughed, the energy of it drifting off her in waves, palpable enough so Kat could feel it too, Jo’s infectious grin catching.

“C’mon,” Jo smirked as she started the car. “We still got a hundred miles of ground to burn.”

“Maybe we can outrun this heat,” Kat muttered to herself, but Jo laughed, beaming at her, warm and brighter than the Arizona sun.
