I had trouble deciding on an icon for this post, but decided to go with Flowers in the Attic. VC Andrews: making people ship incest since before I was born.

Almost all my incest ships are codependent. And if they're not, they probably have resentment issues. (Or both.)

yeeeaah, cross-gen is not my thing either. I can sometimes do like an uncle or aunt thing if they didn't really interact much when the younger one was a child. (Or if the age gap is small, which makes the relationship more like cousins.)

(And I ended up finding Bates Motel too squicky. Though I'm still really attracted to Dylan for some reason.) (Also can't ship: Angel/Connor. I know the fanged four was all kind of incestuous and Connor was raised by someone else but. Angel really thinks of Connor as his kid okay and Connor has enough father issues no no no the Cordelia possession thing was bad enough.)

Like some ships I just can't do because the age gap is too much (Katniss/Prim, Buffy/Dawn--both don't feel like parent/child but there's an element of the sister being far too old for me to ship with their bb sibling) or ships I can't do because they don't feel THAT kind of messed up,

Oh man, I think both of these play into why I don't really ship Bellamy/Octavia in The 100. (Which you and Heather should watch btw.) I mean to start with he's 6 or 7 years older than her (I mean we actually see him look after her as a baby. And he was the one to name her). And I mean apparently the show is cool with 23 year old dudes sleeping with teenage girls (to be fair it's in a post-apocalyptic situation and I think they originally meant for Bellamy to be younger). But Bellamy and their mother were literally the only two people Octavia interacted with for the first 15-16 years of her life. (Society with a one child only policy, and all crimes being punishable by death.) So while some of Bellamy's willingness to do ANYTHING for Octavia could lead to shippy feelings I'm kind of. idk there is fic where things happen before Octavia's existence is discovered and that is pretty squicky to me? Like she has zero interaction with the outside world and Bellamy is very much in the caretaker role at that point. (It evens out later on but.)

And oddly, despite Octavia having spent most of her life locked up, Bellamy agreeing to assassinate someone so he could come down to Earth with her, Bellamy once discovering her making out with a dude and then TYING HIM TO A TREE AND LEAVING HIM THERE OVERNIGHT, etc. They seem oddly functional?? Like by the end of season one, Bellamy is letting her be her own person and look after herself. He feels guilty about doing bad things. And actually stops doing them?? like idk man in comparison to the Salvatores and the Winchesters, the Blakes are really healthy. [/rant on show you don't even watch lmao]

***************

I find incest fic hard though, because hardly anyone wants to commit to it.

YES. ...the idea of Jeremy and Elena thinking of each other as cousins is so bizarre, wow. And people pulled that a bunch with Thor/Loki too which. Loki being adopted does not make it non-incestuous okay. And they refer to each other as Brother half the time what are you doing. (I mean you could always use the 'Asgardian society is different' excuse if you wanted to avoid incest drama but don't pretend it's not incest.)

SIDENOTE: One of the reasons that Flowers in the Attic works for me and most of the ghost-written VC Andrews books do not, is because FiTA really commits to the incest. A lot of the later ones have "oh we didn't know we were related I guess we can't be together" or "damn I was always attracted to my sibling HEY COOL WE'RE NOT RELATED LET'S BANG" (which is even weirder to me). Whereas Cathy and Chris were always aware they were siblings and it's weird and fucked up. (And honestly Chris is kind of a shitty love interest, but way less terrible than her other ones.) And later it turns out that their parents were not just half-uncle and niece but HALF SIBLINGS so Cathy and Chris are super related looool.

(The VC Andrews protagonists actually written by VC Andrews are also allowed to become bitter as a result of their experiences, which is much more satisfying to read.)

Taking an incest ship and trying to make it more palpable or less wrong kills part of the appeal for me?

same!

Chuck/Herc in Pacific Rim -- I am so confused by the way that ship gets written. Again, not my thing, but just from what I've read out of curiosity... People also do that with Raleigh/his brother fic, which is irritating, but not as baffling as with a parent/child ship jfc.

semi-related to this post: There are actually fandoms I have where I occasionally go "man I could probably get Scorp and Heather to consider this if I talked about all the incest".

Did VC Andrews write the FiTA sequels? I kinda wanna read it, but I heard Chris rapes Cathy, which is really deterring me (and something I'm glad the film fixed), but I'm also interested in the sequels when they're an established thing? LOL I was unaware VC Andrews had more incest books under her name, even if they never quite went full incest. The ghost writers were weaaaaaak.

damn I was always attracted to my sibling HEY COOL WE'RE NOT RELATED LET'S BANG

oh god I always find that SO WEIRD. I think Arrested Development did that but for laughs over how ridiculous it was. Otherwise, it's just ??? If you were attracted to your sibling, finding out you're not blood related is not like...A FREE PASS???

I get so baffled by Chuck/Herc because like, if I stop to think about it, I really do see WHY people would be into it? They're in each other's brains and then there's ghost drifting and I can just see that laying the groundwork some really fucked up, twisted dark parent/child fic there. BUT THAT IS NOT THE FIC. AT ALL!!! Why do I read things to understand them and end up hating them, I have no clue. Like I've seen people use the neural handshake, drift compabile-ness as a reason to ship Raleigh/Yancy (which I do like, is anyone surprised; even if they also pull the CASUAL FUN INCEST thing with them, I've read some fic that added some angst to it and grounded it somewhat? But it's hard to find) but I've never seen anyone be so CASUAL about a parent/child ship so i am just ??? at that part of fandom.

YO YOU SHOULD TELL ME WHICH FANDOMS

BECAUSE INCEST IS LEGIT THE NUMBER ONE WAY TO SELL ME SOMETHING

The other way is ships that kill people together (this is legit how Heather sold Sons of Anarchy on me)

lol I had the same trouble. Let's see if I get to use all my incestuous icons for this post. Codependency and resentment mix well, though, right? A lot of my incest ships sort of thrive on resentment on some level.

I DID NOT KNOW YOU QUIT BATES MOTEL BECAUSE IT WAS TOO SQUICKY. I thought you simply stopped watching but meant to catch up I stopped somewhere in the middle of like....season 2? But oh god it's so so squicky, though, even if it's not technically canon. (Dylan is hot. Is there any other reason needed? Lol me and Heather fancasted the actor as a young Uncle Eddie Gecko tbh so) (LOL IT NEVER EVEN OCCURRED TO ME TO SHIP ANGEL/CONNOR AT ALL D: TBF I don't dabble in the fandom but like...THAT'S HIS KID D: ANGEL TOTALLY THINKS OF HIM AS HIS CHILD! LIKE D: )

...oh OH I didn't know this about Bellamy/Octavia. It makes me a bit sad, because like, I thought I would ship them? I was sort of looking forward to shipping them? (If I watch the 100, I thought my priorities would be Bellamy/Octavia and Raven/Clarke) They seem like the types I'd ship and there are people who ship them on my dash. But the fact that Octavia did not interact with people except for her mom and Bellamy for the first 15-16 years of her life is actually kinda D: I enjoy isolation in incest ships but it should be mutual isolation??? otherwise that feels like...there's pretty serious development differences between the two. Like, maybe after she's out and seen the world somewhat??

Like by the end of season one, Bellamy is letting her be her own person and look after herself. He feels guilty about doing bad things. And actually stops doing them??

ACTUALLY STOPS DOING THIS. I'M SO SAD THIS IS ACTUALLY RARE. "I FEEL GUILTY SO I WILL STOP DOING THE BAD THING. UNLIKE SOME OTHER PEOPLE" AHAHHA

People totally pull that thing with Thor/Loki and it pisses me off. I do think, that like, as Asgardian immortal/demigods, they'd feel a lot more casual about sibling incest so I don't see why people add the adoption issues as a reason to discount their sibling bond. Like I've honestly yet to read a Thor/Loki fic I like, but tbf that is because of a bunch of OTHER factors that bug me in Thor/Loki fic. People pull that thing with Kate/Scott too (RARE OF A SHIP AS IT IS, I saw someone comment "I feel a little guilty about Kate/Scott but it's not like he's her REAL brother" and I just wanted to shake them because YOU ARE THE REASON WHY SCOTT HAS A COMPLEX!!! /o\)
