Pixar movies don't interest me at all. I've seen every one of them, and feel so-so at best (Cars, strangely enough).
The CGI never grabbed me at the start (Toy Story, and I wasn't a Tom Hanks fan). I didn't care about all the heartwarming stories about broken homes. I never found their work to be cute.
And now, with Up, my apathy has reached is peak (if that's even possible). Let me go back a bit first though: Ratatouille I actually found offensive. It sounds crazy, I know, but it's about a sewer rat that cooks. No matter how hard I try, I can't let that go. My disbelief will not allow itself to be suspended for such a thing.
A sewer rat that cooks food in a restaurant.
Wall-E was eh. I did find the live action bits to be cloying and unnecessary, but overall I didn't hate it.
Now let's talk about Up. This movie has me confused. I'm confused as to why so many people thought it was one of the top movies of the year, and as to why people got teary-eyed at it.
Schizophrenic is what I'd call it. And a dangerous schizophrenic too. Cutesy characters, low-brow humor, melancholy of aging, cartoon shenanigans, attempted murder and death. I don't mind saying I just don't get it.
Even for a cartoon, this movie doesn't make sense to me. Its elements all fight one another, some to break loose and be carefree cartoon, and others to be a serious adult animated feature, and none win or even call a truce to meld successfully.
This felt more like an effort at making a "Pixar movie" than anything. I'd like to see a PIxar movie that goes all out in one direction or another at some point: complete cartoon (though I know that's what they're competing against with the other animation studio projects), or true adult animated movie (which I would say Cars is the closest thing to--probably why most people didn't seem to care for it).
