My friend from high school, Alyssa DeVelder, is now Alyssa Noreen. It is strange to think that someone that just a few years ago was hanging out with myself, Kyle, Nick, Shannon, among others has moved on in life and got married. There was a moment at the wedding last night where I was overwhelmed with joy for her. I'd been happy for other people before, for many reasons, but the feeling I had was not something I had ever really experienced. It was this rush of joy. This overall feeling that I knew she would be a happier person because of the step she took. She was glowing. She was experiencing true happiness. What I saw in her in felt in myself, I wish upon everyone I know. May you all be as happy as I saw Alyssa last night.
It was a rather quaint wedding and not too many folks from our graduating class were there. Shannon, Raya, Jodi, Kyle and I were there along with Nate Gieseke, who was there by default as he is dating Alyssa's younger sister. It was great seeing Raya. Nothing against the rest of them, but she was always someone I got along with really easily. I could make her laugh and she could make me laugh and good times are always associated with old speech team buddies. She's married now. Raya Shibilski. They had a civil service before he went to Ft. Benning, Georgia with the Army. They'll have a church service and celebration come December in New Ulm. She, too, seems happy and talks a lot about Luke. She's very honest about him and that's great. She's not lying about who he is to impress others. Shannon is good too. She's dating a younger lad named Pete. She told me right off the bat that I'd get along with him. Usually, that's not always the case. But, she was right. He's good people. Shannon is teaching at Arts High and loving it. Jodi is schooling yet and doing her student teaching. Nate is going back to school after graduating. Everyone seemed so happy with the places they were in life and I was happy to see that. There were a lot of great things about yesterday's events, but I think the hardest part was answering the the question, "Where's Emily?"
Anyway, TV on the Radio makes me feel better. I picked up their new CD the other day and have listened to it 3 or 4 times. Track 2, "Hours," is fantastic. I love the whole CD, but I could listen to that song over and over again. I'm excited to see them live. Also, the song I've been listening to the most lately is Bishop Allen's "Flight 180." They're releasing an EP for every month of 2006 and it was a tune from May or March or sometime after February. I can't remember. While on the issue of music, I should mention that I've been listening to Drive105 a lot more lately than The Current. I like the idea of The Current. Though, I find myself disliking more songs than I enjoy. I listened to it for a few weeks because they were playing new stuff from TV on the Radio, but then it was released in stores, I purchased the CD and didn't need their services any longer. And though Drive105 can really overplay some songs, I guess I'd rather hear a bunch of ok-to-decent songs than a boatload of boring songs with the occasional diamond. For me, The Current is just too calm and chill to want to listen to it when I'm giving most of my attention to the words, rhythms, beats, riffs, etc. etc. It is perfect for background noise. I think it is a great station to have on at work, when you've got something else to occupy your time. But, honestly, I can't listen to it on my way to or from work. The DJs are great. Mary Lucia is fun, Mark Wheat is great, Steve Seel is charming... but the music and I just don't click often enough. That isn't to say I don't like MOST of the artists, it is generally the choice of songs.
When listening to the current, my mind works like this:
(1a) Initial Excitement - You're thrilled because they're playing a band you like.
(1b) Questioning - You've never heard the artist before and are initially open.
(2a) The Chase - Your minds works hard to figure out where on the CD the song is, what album it is on, the fond memories attached with the band/cd/song.
(2b) On Trial - You listen to the song's themes, lyrics, instruments to understand it as a whole to make a judgment.
(c) The Light bulb - You either realize that you dislike the song after hearing it for the first time or this is one of your least favorite tracks from a band you enjoy.
That's it for now. Work tomorrow and then ComedySportz at night. Tuesday is a big day.
