I managed to get to the 3rd Altair sequence on ACR tonight. It made me both happy and really depressed at the same time.
We got a nice few moments of Altair and Maria:
"We may be walking to our death, Maria."
"Perhaps, but we'll be walking together."
At the same time, it was the sequence that took place when Abbas had betrayed them, killed Malik, and ordered the murder their youngest son, Sef.
Although it was still upsetting, I'm glad that Ubisoft changed the way Maria died. Instead of going by Oliver Bowden's book and having Swami "slit her throat", Ubisoft had Maria get in the way and take a stab in the back for Altair. Altair got the bastard Swami in return, though. Bravo.
Here's how it went down:
Abbas was demanding Altair to give him the Apple of Eden, but Altair wanted to know why his son was killed first. Swami approached him, saying they told Sef that his father had ordered his death. Making him die believing that his father had betrayed him. Altair became mad at this and used the Apple's power to somewhat send Swami insane. Maria was telling Altair to stop and tried to make him calm down just as Swami pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the back. Altair brought his hidden blade to Swami's throat straight afterwards. As he brought Maria gently to the floor, she whispered to him, "Strength, Altair." I think she had the same voice actor as the first game, which made me happy. Then Altair ran. I got even more upset that he had to leave his wife's body there in order to escape. He met up with his eldest son, Darim, and together they escaped Masyaf. Darim asked what had happened, and Altair said Abbas betrayed them and brainwashed the Creed, killing Malik and Sef. Darim asked where his mother was, Altair apologized and said that she was gone. I always break down even more when a character asks where someone is after they die, and seeing their reaction as they find out (e.g. Baird and Cole's reactions upon finding out about Dom in Gears 3).
It was this scene I was waiting for ever since the game was first announced, where they said we'd get to relive Altair's early and later life. I had a feeling we'd see Maria's death. I'm happy that we got to see her with Altair at least, and definitely relieved that she died in a less horrible way than having her throat slit. Thank you so much for changing that, Ubisoft.
7hanks for lis7ening!
