here, read my roadsign

Thought goes into reading. People don't seem to remember this anymore. People read books, magazines, the newspaper, and even webpages. But they don't think about them. Reading words, just words. Without thinking about what you're reading, it's meaningless. Form opinions, let emotions happen. Get angry or sad about something you've read. Read the news and empathize with the stories. Mourn for a loss, or tragedy. Get choked up in your throat, feel the tears. Don't just stand there and say "What a shame." Don't just move onto the next thing and read that. Words are not meant for just textbooks, yet that's how everyone treats them. Like all written language is meant for is studying. Words are meant to convey thoughts, feelings, ideas, and more. They are not lifeless, even if they may reside on paper or a computer screen. People put as much effort into reading a book as they do a roadsign.

This angers me, this irritates me, this sentence probably hasn't even raised an eyebrow. Get into what you read. Try to feel what the author feels, whether it's a book or simply a blog on the web. People will invest so much time and emotion into writing, but when it comes to reading they simply look at the words. Reading poetry without trying to understand it's meaning, it's pointless. Reading an eyewitness account, without imagining what it was like to be there. It's dry, it's boring, and it's disrespectful.

Can you remember when you were a child and you were read a story book? Can you remember trying to imagine the scenes described? The awe as something magnificant was mentioned, or the fear when something scary was told of? What happened to everyone? Why the loss of enthusiam? It's a shame I say, a goddamn shame.
