That was one of the first things Deidara ever learned about Sasori. The man hated waiting. Snapping at him through the wooden core of Hiruko's body, telling him to hurry up, and grow up already! The bird was beating across the sky in record speed, giving Deidara something else to think than his recent, constant failures. Wind screaming against his face didn't quite prove to be as much of a distraction as he would have liked, but it was something.

He had not expected anything else than what he had got from Sasori, a lecture that was well earned. It did not change the fact that Deidara wished he could have avoided it. Pride was one thing, being disappointed in yourself was another. Even the fact that he knew that Sasori was trying to make the blow softer made him ache.

He shouldn't have needed to do that for Deidara.

Like an errand child. Again. Dead weight. Hungry for reassurance, mouth full of lies and deceit. Hot air.

He wanted to retch over the bird's back when the building loomed ahead. But instead of soiling himself, he pulled the bird to a halt and let it float down quietly, peacefully even, giant wings flapping up dust from the rooftop while white claws settled down to the ground silently.

Sasori was smoking again. It was strange how easily a scent of something so mundane could be registered as a source of familiarity and safety.

Deidara gave a small, rather humorless grin as he let himself slide off the bird, steeling himself as his feet came to the ground. Now was not the right time to remind Sasori of any injuries he might have gained from his stupid fight with Yachiru. His face, however, was an unfortunate reminder he couldn't quite hide away.

"Sasori-danna," he murmured as a greeting.
