[Heady, intoxicating melange of things almost familiar yet distictly and very sharply ...not.]
[Knotted silks twined round the wrist of a passing girl, a teasing trail of peacock hues, shot with silver and disappearing into the murmuring crowds.]
[Dawn Summers stands staring at a gaslight. Unlit, forlorn and still against the backdrop of gilt and automata, its unilluminated gaze regarding her with a solemn hello as it curls skyward.
[It followed the smoke.]
[She followed the bells.]
[Tinsel-tinkle, slight and light and setting her nerves on fire - the sound of steps against her blood pulse, filling her ears and beckoning her to join the dance.]
I-it's the smoke. It's--
Oooh. Shiny.
[Oh my God the light. It's like---]
Wow.
[Smoke creeping in as the shadow had gone before and giving chase to its incorporeal cousin--]
//The shadow of the shadow, one might say.//
[---it danced through her brain, stealing past the darkness gathered there - past recent shock and tempered sorrow - ( ... )

[A whirr emanates from the strange shoes - and the heels begin to fold into themselves, bit by bit until the entire heel is flattened. Dawn turns to Johan, slackjawed.]
Oh! Well...that's just about the most convenient thing ever.

[Tilts her head in similar directions, squinting at the shoe.]
Maybe it's voice-activated. Where's Ruby? Is she getting her leg looked at?
Reply
[He stares at the shoe.] Well, go on, then, if you're voice-activated, go back the way you were.

[She looks around suddenly, still smiling a little.]
Is she sunlight activated? Or is sunlight more like a food? I-is it dangerous here for her, where we are?
[I think it was Dismal? Disma.... Dismas. Yup, that's it.]
[She just couldn't recall what was actually in Dismas.]
Yeah. What he said. Be an impossibly high heel again.
[Click. Whirr. Click click click. Heel!]

Isn't it though?
[Waving to the Tunnelman to get his attention, hoping to negotiate. She notices the duel deck.]
What's that? Did you get that here?
Reply
I don't know. A lot of people here seem to be able to do something.
[He glances at his duel disk, and his face lights up as he grins.] No. It's a duel disk. From my world. You can play Duel Monsters with it . . . if you have anybody to duel with.

Hey! Those are pretty neat! Try'em on, Dawn. Do they do anything?
Not sure when you'd where them though...

[A gruff voice cuts into the conversation, and next thing they know, a metal hand is holding the shoes aloft.]
You could wear them anywhere! Let's say you've got an appointment. Could wear these shoes.

Oh! Wait. I've got. This.
[Her eyes widen as she digs in her front pocket. She's clumsy, overexcited, and after a moment she produces a smallish, glimmering crystal on a chain.]
I-is this something that I could trade? For the shoes? I have more at home in my room. Different stones, but...
Oh! And I have a ring.
Slipping it off her finger, she holds out an ornate ring. The center stone is large, very black and flanked by smaller yellow stones - maybe citrines, but she's not sure. The metalwork itself is fluid - serpentshaped and very bronze.
...can I try them on?
