[He doesn't really know why he's here. It's not as if he believes writing wishes on paper and setting them afloat will actually make them come true. He's not even really sure what he believes in anymore. Something like this is for those that hold onto optimism, hope, and goodwill. It's not for lost, broken-down sinners who've lost everything but the fear of death.

Still, a celebration of wishes like this, it stirs something in him long dormant--an eleven-year-old boy who should have perished long ago. He can't help but feel strangely at peace here, as he did once before here, months ago in the snow in a week of no sun, despite his general discomfort with social gatherings.

It's...enough to have him even make a wish.

[When Scar had decided to come, Mei had been a little bit more than overjoyed. It was hard to go out and spend a lot of time with him and now that he was here, she couldn't help but be a little excited.

So she smiles up at him, tilts her head and wonders what she should say. After that fireworks incident...]

Did you make a wish too, Scar-san?

[He sometimes marvels at how she can smile at him so easily, innocently. She sees the best in him when he doesn't deserve it and sometimes he wants to smile back for her. He never quite gets close to that childish joy that he sees so often, but when he looks back at her his expression is mild and placid, the usual scowl missing altogether.

He nods in response to her question, and meanwhile, though he doesn't go to tie it to the tree, he mentally makes another wish--that the spark in her eyes as she looks at him never fades.]

And you?

I did! I don't think I can tell you though. [She giggles a little, glancing over at the bamboo.] It won't come true if I do.

[But she does reach up and pat his arm. He seems better from before... and while Mei doesn't know much about what happened in his past, she does know that Scar's suffered enough. She's glad he's here, that he can get this chance to take a break from it all.]

I hope your wish comes true.

[He flinches just slightly when she touches him, but it's nowhere near the reaction a stranger might get, or the kind Senji gets when he's deliberately trying to get a rise out of him by ignoring his none-too-unclear need for personal space. It's just a slight tightening of the muscles that releases in a moment.]

That's all right.

[He appreciates the sentiment when Mei tells him she hopes his wish comes true, and maybe the first part can. Maybe he'll never get sent home by the Door. It's already been eight months, after all.

The second part...he sincerely doubts.]

[If she notices that tensing, she doesn't say anything. She's come to know Scar doesn't like people worrying about him, even if he really needs it sometimes. She maintains that bright smile and lowers her hand, resisting the urge to drag him forward to talk to people, to maybe get something to eat, even to ask what his wish was. Never force Scar into anything. She knew that the moment she met him.]

I will make sure they do.

[She looks away from him, around at the other people here, at the wishes growing and beams.] Are you hungry, Scar-san?

[There's something about the way she says that that makes Scar not want to tell her there's nothing she could do. Whether or not he got to remain in Anatole for the rest of his days was up to the Door, as was the possibility of seeing his brother again. He sighs and looks away.]

[The subject change is greatly appreciated, and while he's not particularly hungry, he's not particularly opposed to it either, and really, he has nothing better to do now that the wish-making is done.]

Not really, but I don't mind joining you if you are.

I'm a little surprised to see you here.

[She comes up behind Scar, and her tone is light and a little teasing.]

[He jumps a little at the voice suddenly addressing him from behind, but he relaxes when he realizes who it is.]

I'm a bit surprised myself. I'm...not really sure why I came.

[Because seriously, getting Scar out of his antisocial hole is always a good thing]
