[This is, all things considered, a hell of a way to spend one's seventeenth birthday.
For one thing, aside from her fourteenth when she was away on a mission, it is her first outside of Konoha. Normally Sakura wakes up early because she's too restless to sleep in, even a little bit. Normally she can count on certain people to find her and wish her happy returns. Naruto was one of them. Iruka-sensei was one of them. Ino was one (although during their years of rivalry, hers was typically more malicious. "You're another year older, huh? How long before you start getting wrinkles in that forehead of yours?"). Normally when she got home there would be gifts and dinner and a cake baked by her mother and her father's warm arms and warm voice saying "Happy birthday, baby."
In Anatole, her parents aren't here. Neither is Iruka. Ino was, but now she's gone, and Sakura wakes up late and sleeps intermittently throughout the day because a few days ago she lost a lot of blood. She certainly won't be running anywhere. Not while she's recovering.
No, today doesn't exactly rank up there on a list of good birthdays. She resigns herself for it to pass without ceremony or fanfare, and she thinks she can be fine with that.
So when she wakes up from one of those naps, she blinks a few times at the bedside table.
