He's only here to... why is he here? Even he does not have an answer. It's duty. Yes, that's why. He's here to make sure there is no wandering murderer who might just pluck one from the crowd in their attempts to 'relax'. Someone must be in their right mind.
So he stops, accepting his reason as truth and takes a look around. Ah, perhaps something to eat. His cooking, if it could be considered as such, leaves much to be desired.]

[It's a statement, not a surprised question, but she does sound like she was a little bit hopeful.]
I was wondering if you'd show up or not. You didn't get dressed up? [Not that that would be expected of someone like Byakuya.
She realizes suddenly that they're standing very near the food, and she blinks down at the table, intrigued by something there.] What is that?

It's not uncommon for me to attend social functions. [His answer is rather absent, his attention on what's caught hers.]
Perhaps you should try it.

Ah, I see.... huh, do you think so? I guess I could.

Why have you come?
[He intends for it to be harsh, but it doesn't come out as threatening as it usually might have.]

It's not often we all get together like this, you know? It's fun. And I was able to get a new dress.
[It doesn't sound as harsh as he may have tried to make it, no. Which is fine with her.] What about you, Byakuya?

You need a reason to buy clothing?
[He's dodging around the question because though he's been able convince himself doesn't mean he'll be able to convince her.]
Have you ever had taiyaki? [To him, it sounds like a very good change of subject, motioning like he might to a guest in his home towards some further down.]

Well, I don't really have the Ivory to just buy a full wardrobe, so yes, kind of.
[And honestly, it probably wouldn't work. She doesn't like to think that his duties are so strict that he must inforce them so harshly here.
The question catches her offguard, and she raises her finger to her lips to think about it.] No. I don't think so. Is it good?

I see.
[He eats less, can work harder and do a long list of things she can't. He supposes while he has a little saved up and stashed away, she might not be so lucky as he. It's not really a surprise and a useless thing to note, but there's no reason to worry about it now.
She doesn't know him very well, does she? His duties dictate everything. That, too, is a must.]
It is. You should try it.

Mmhmm. That's all, really. [And she's not, but she's kind of fine with it. She doesn't need much. A paper doll only needs crayons to color with, after all.
How can she, though? He doesn't let anyone in.
She points carefully to the little fish-shaped thing he'd gestured to before.] This here?

It's only a statement. She doesn't know, she doesn't need to know and it is best she not assume.]
Yes. They are quite famous in my world. [He busies himself with other things, things he knows are edible.] I have not had any of this world's variety, however.
