His footsteps fall silent as he sees a figure standing ont he roof--much like himself. A kindred spirit. He's reminded of his eldest, Federico, and the first time they climbed to the roof of their grand home, the first tower he saw him scale and stand proudly atop.
Yes, that's painful.
If the man has any of the same sense Giovanni does, he'll note him passing to the opposite rooftop to get a better look.]

hi dad. he wore your robes, you know. for a while, until he got the ones in the basement. ]

He gets as close to the edge of the roof as he dares, leaving himself enough room to take a short running start and cross between the buildings, if needed.
It isn't a significant gesture, but he offers the cloaked man a nod.
And during that nod, he takes a good, long look at the man. The symbol. The silhouette. The outline, a color he's never seen before.]
Assassin?

so. uh. yeah. he nods. ]
We are not always the only ones up here, brother.
[ so... he might have just addressed his father like he would any brother in the brotherhood. SOUNDS LEGIT RIGHT and not too revealing.
except, you know. his voice. WAY TOO EYETALIAN. ]

[He takes a few light steps and leaps to the other roof.
Beside Ezio.
And he takes one good look at him before backing the fuck up. He doesn't let his expression falter, but...]

Istanbul, technically.
[ but yes, italy. ]

[Quite. Literally.]

Before that, Roma. [ a pause. ]
Claudia told me to come find you.
[ THAT'S RIGHT, DAD, HE WAS TOTALLY WAFFLING ABOUT THIS. AND CLAUDIA HAD TO KICK HIS ASS INTO GEAR ]

Your sister was right.
[Not that he doesn't understand. To keep his son alive (he prayed), he never told Ezio anything. Ezio may hate him; he's not going to ask. He actually doesn't want to know.
It hurts, but he keeps his distance.]

il mentore slips his hood off-- they're alone up here, and a man doesn't always have to be an assassin. ezio-- not the assassino-- learned that from you, many, many years later. it is a gesture of openness, though he is still filled with regret.
he failed you, father. he should have checked, should have been more careful, should have stayed and fought instead of run in the square that morning. ]

He trusted Lorenzo. He trusted Lorenzo's associates.
Lorenzo was wrong.
Nothing could be done but to protect his family and pray to God that he could salvage it with dangerous information. The last thing he ever wanted to do was put his family in any sort of danger. Ezio was given vague instructions, and he hoped and prayed that he'd be there to explain things.
There's a lump in his throat, and his eyes sting.
If Ezio is acting like this, if he didn't want to see him, then he failed his entire family.]

I did not think the Door would actually bring you here, father.
[ SO MANY FEELINGS. HOLD IT TOGETHER, MAN. HOLD IT TOGETHER. (ezio, no, you're ruining everything) ]

[Giovanni casts his eyes out over the rooftops, to the ground, anywhere but at Ezio.]
I am glad your sister convinced you to speak with me. If you have anything to say, I will listen.
