The death of the world, person by person, would be an agonizingly slow process. But the mist, the monsters, and the murderers would steadily take their toll. Many cursed the door, but it did offer the best chance for the city's survival in Beyond's mind. It was the Door that spit out new life that didn't need to slapped and cleaned off. In the face of such an unnatural thing, it really should come as a relief that people could still die. Dying was natural.

But murder triggered something in people. It was viewed as especially tragic. In humans' minds, murder, and therefore death, was avoidable. But Beyond had been denied such an innocent way of thinking. He had known from birth that the day of his father's death was unavoidable. That he would die at a murderer's hands barely qualified as a detail.

But he had something of a morbid curiosity. So examining the body of a murder victim seemed like a good way to pass the day. Who knows? Maybe he would get a chance to see the mist in action. Yes, that was something to occupy his mind on the way to the rendezvous point. Would it strip the body one layer at a time? First the skin, then the muscle tissue and organs, until the very bones themselves were decomposed into nothingness. Or would it be eaten limb by limb, devoured by a mist that seemed both alive and predatory.

Beyond started walking faster. He couldn't help himself. He wanted to see this. And it simply wouldn't do to keep Misora waiting, not when she'd been so generous to him at their last freak show.
