people can talk to Dene if they want! I'm cool with anything, really. twoswordjuniper June 25 2011, 17:29:45 UTC
[Deneve appears beside Shirley, almost like a ghost - she has been called one before though she never actually died - and takes a seat. Not exactly invited but not unwelcome, she thinks.

It is perhaps an added point in her favor that, unasked, she brings Shirley a glass of what she most often drinks. But don't let it get around that she can actually be rather thoughtful. She likes her reputation of being hardhearted.]

[shirley most definitely thinks it, but she doesn't say it. instead, she only raises her glass as a "thank you for the thought" type of gesture and takes a sip of her brandy.]

You're observant.

When it is useful.

[And it's always useful. Now, for instance. She scans the crowd with silver eyes and takes a drink of the ale she brought for herself. This person or that person catch her attention. The drunk can be amusing to observe.]

That one.

[She gestures toward a stumbling drunk with only the slightest inclination of her head.]

He will attempt to touch that woman at the bar. He won't get far.

[And moments after she makes this statement, the inebriated man tries to put his arm around the woman in question. Subtly, she pulls a knife on him. From where Deneve and Shirley sit, it is barely a flash of light. And showing what wisdom he can muster in his current state, he backs off.]

[shirley follows the gesture and watches, half-amused.]

It won't be long before he attempts another woman, though.

True. And not all are quite so well prepared.

[She watches with seeming disinterest, though really she's trying to spot his next target before he does.]

At least they can make use of his clumsiness.

[and as she sips her brandy, guess who nearly takes a tumble after tripping over a table leg. laughably, he even dusts imaginary dirt off and checks around himself to see who noticed.]

Fortunately, he has that in abundance.

[Their specimen pauses, wobbley on his feet, and chooses his next move. It apparently involves a brown-haired woman who stands up at the bar. He should probably have quit while he was ahead, but he is apparently too drunk to know what's good for him.]

[unlike the other woman, she isn't as quick to reject him. in fact, she looks a little surprised when he leans against the bar for coolness; but then, he's saying something equally cheesy and sweet, and she frowns. she doesn't leave yet, though.]

Ah, but it would seem he has found a merciful audience.

Perhaps she is drunk too.

[He is apparently trying to be suave, touching her hand, probably complimenting her though Deneve is too far away and the bar is too loud to actually hear.]

Or too kind to save herself the trouble, perhaps.

[she still isn't smiling, but she hasn't walked away yet. or drawn a knife on him...]

Foolish. She shouldn't waste her time if she is uninterested.

[And indeed she doesn't look too enamored with him. He slides a little closer, his elbows on the bar for support, and she stands still, seemingly unable to decide whether to walk away.]

It is an unfortunate habit many women are taught.

[oh, but she finally is! because he touches her hand, and frowning apologetically, she seems to make some excuse to be on her way. with some trouble. maybe her problem is she can't say no! their dear drunk frowns. then, lifts his hand to his mouth, huffing out and sniffing his breath. it is not terrible, in his opinion!]

I'm glad it was never part of my training.

[The departure of his target - despite the supposedly inoffensive nature of his breath - seems to have depressed their little drunk somewhat and he takes a seat at the bar to drown his sorrows in another pint. How typical.]

I doubt such teaching would impact you.

[that is a compliment!]

Hm. That may be true.

[She takes it as such!]

It makes no sense for people to teach their daughters not to follow their instincts.
